Quake Live, TF2, and Tribes: Ascend are all great free fps games. Quake being the most balanced and fun of course.

These are some very, very good recent titles. Serious Sam 3 is also great.

You should check out E.Y.E.: TDC, Cryostasis, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and the three games from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.

Minecraft and Teraria are pretty fun as well as Cave Story+. Limbo, Trine and Trine 2, Braid, and The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom are great indie/puzzle games.

Just throwing Just Cause 2 out their also... just cause it is fun (pun was a tad intended).
