I used to use Avast, recently switched to Avira as a part of testing out a certain tweaking procedure before writing a guide about it and I've kept it since then. Both of them are free, both of them are very good. I used to use AVG in the past, but it's really a system hog these days, and if you're gaming on your PC you don't wan that. If you want to purchase one, I suggest NOD32. Outstanding little thing. Honestly though, there is no need, Avira or Avast are as good and are free.

I have been using Cyberdefender. I got it about a year ago when I got something called the virtumondo virus. They have a free trial but it only finds the problems, which my computer had many. It was about $40 to get the full version, which is about what it costs for others. Anyway, it fixed some of the issues but not all. It comes with a 24 x 7 call center, which I called and they were really helpful (and not from India) and told me that since I installed the software after I got the virus that they would need to fixed by remote access. 5 minutes later it was done and the system was clean. Since then I have gotten a pop-up every now and then saying something is attacking my computer, and I click the button and it is blocked. Easy to use and I am happy with it. JMHO

Before that i used AVG but lets just say after that is why i went for a paid AV.

Um. Isn't Nortom made by Symantec? I had heard the company produced garbage...

On a side note, I use MSSE

MSE is my antivirus of choice. Very resource-light and has a good detection rate.

Norton is worse than a Virus. Slows your computer down, interrupts you all the time and is tricky to remove.

Well heavy registry cleaners are bad news from my experience, they just break stuff. CCleaner is mainly a junk file remover and registry cleaner second. The reason why I suggest ccleaners registry cleaning is because it doesent dig to deep.

I'd trash McAfee and get NOD32 if I were you. It's the best! 8)

McAfee is pretty rubbish. If it came pre-loaded its most likely a 30 day trial. If so I recommend uninstalling it and just using a free alternative such as Microsoft Security Essentials. There isnt really any need to pay for an AV like Nod32 unless you are a high threat user.

That software tends to get preloaded because the AV company paid them to include a trial or in the case of PC World they own shares in the company. Switch to a free one instead otherwise you're ****ed when the trial runs out.

Microsoft Security Essentials. Just enable USB scanning. Anything else is unnecessary unless you deliberately visit certain sites.

wait, the one that is coming with my laptop is not a trial version, it is 15-months. Should I still get rid of it since it is the full version?

As an IT Professional, which you should be able to tell from my signature, I recommend Avast+Spybot S&D+ Malwarebytes. All free and good pieces of software. I highly, highly, highly suggest avoiding Norton like the plague. Their firewall has a bad habit of suddently blocking all internet traffic and the only way to fix it is to uninstall Norton. That shouldn't be a problem, but guess what, you have to download a uninstall utility in order to remove the registery edits is makes and how are you supposed to download the uninstall utility if you can't get online. It's an endless circle of POS. On the same wave lenth, there is now an issue where Norton is causing the local loopback to error out when you ping it as well. Not even a winsock reset will fix it and the only resolution again is to uninstall Norton.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 anyone? I've been using Kaspersky since 2006 and it's done me very well. It seems like a lot of companies are coming up with quality stuff though.

I use Cyberdefender as well and I love it. I originally got the Cyberdefender scanner which cleans Trojans and spyware for free, but you have to pay for the upgrade for virus. So I used it for checking. Eventually I got a virus - a bad one called virtumondo, and bought the upgrade. Since then no problems. Cyberdefender caught a few trojans and one more virus attack, and it worked great. The upgrade I got includes 24/7 computer help, which my wife needed once when I was away on a trip. So, I hope this helps, it is just my informal review of my Cyberdefender experience.

I use Zone Alarm Extreme Security... works wonders using the Kaspersky engine but also has the Zonealarm Firewall so you can't really argue about having two of the best softwares in one package, not sure if it's just me but it only costs £24.99 right now but this could be a renewal deal for me only... Also secures your Firefox browser from keygrabbers that steal the saved passwords and send them to email addresses.

Its Norton who are the rogues, cyberdefender only used the same tactics of rogue software by installing and then asking to pay before removing the threats, seems they have cleaned up their act and are legitimate but like you said they were once rather fishy in how they worked and it's a black stain on their record for people to avoid.
