Built my first PC a couple of years ago and it's served me great.  Think it's time for an upgrade though and I'd love some recommendations (I'm still not great at this stuff).

Here's some of what I got:

Motherboard

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4GHz

Radeon HD 6950 1GB

4GB RAM

---

I think my graphics card is the weakest link in my build, so I'd love some recommendations on some of the new kids on the block.

I also think I could beef my RAM up to 8GB (though let me know if you think this might be a waste).  If I did, what's the best way to go about this?  Should I get 2x4GB sticks or 2x2GB sticks and add them on to the two I have?  Can I do this?

And hopefully my motherboard and CPU are okay.

Everything could do with an upgrade, to be honest. If you had a 2GB 6950 and better motherboard, Crossfire would have been a decent option, but that's not the case. Definitely up your RAM to 8GB. Two sticks can be better than four, for stability with overclocking. If you didn't want to spend a heap of money, you could probably get away with grabbing a Phenom II hex and overclocking it. What's your budget? And what PSU do you have?

I think the cpu and gpu are about the same. Upgrading either will both have impact, gpu more so. Cpu intensive games or online games like bf3 will take heavy hits to cpu.

Ram is the weakest link. Trust me!! I like to call it the bread and butter, you need that taken care of, but too much is just overkill.

Budget?

Yikes.  I certainly have the money to upgrade my motherboard and CPU, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to shell it out all at once atm, which is why I was sort of hoping to just upgrade the graphics card and RAM for now.  I'd say I'm willing to spend about $400-500 now, or wait 5 months or so and spend double that later.

This is my PSU

CPU first. GPU is adequate.

If you're using a 64-bit OS than you could benefit from another 4gb of RAM.  It might not do a whole lot for your gaming but more RAM will always make your OS happy.

I feel like if you upgrade your video card any further your CPU will bottleneck whatever you upgrade to.  I'd say either wait a little till you can re build or upgrade to an 8 core cpu.

Plenty of games will see benefit from more than 4GB of RAM. Opera, Planetside 2 and a few other light programs had my memory usage over 8GB, the other day.

Alright so it looks like I need to hold off a bit until I can upgrade my motherboard, CPU, GPU, and RAM.  I really hope 850W is enough, I like my PSU :P

Can you guys recommend me some parts that I should look into getting?

EDIT: And yeah - I wanted to get into Planetside 2 eventually, and I will definetly be getting BF4...so whatever helps.

It seems like just yesterday people were saying 4gb of RAM was more than you needed (lol).

Might as well upgrade to 8, memory's cheap.

That PSU you linked is more than enough for any single card setup.

What games do you play? What is making you want to upgrade?

Your PC is fairly well balanced - that's the problem we're having!

Get the gtx 760 or hd 7870 xt but don't expect huge performance gains for that you would need the hd 7970 or gtx 770 but they cost 350$ and 400$ respectively (like someone else said, you already have a good pc) If you upgrade your gpu upgrade to 8gb ram. Overclock your cpu.
