ok for my new build i decided on the ATi Radeon HD4870.

now i've read somethings on the card and they claim that it runs hot, and reviewers have said that its a good idea to buy an aftermarket cooler.

however, StarYoshi said that this was only the cause because the fan was only at 20% and if it was put higher than the problem would be solved.

So should i keep the stock 4870 cooler on? or should i go with an aftermarket cooler.

Also, are aftermarket cooler any better than stock coolers?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Here's the fix for controlling the fan speed. I'm sure Rivatuner or Ati Tray Tools will support the HD48xx series soon.

I suggest you try that fix before buying an aftermarket cooler, because the stock cooler pushes the hot air outside of the case, and aftermarket coolers don't.

But if you're not satisfied with the temperature, Hardware Canucks tried a few coolers on the HD4870 with great results.

I got my 4850 in last week and put a DuOrb cooler on it. Now it sits at 32c Idle and never gets over 42c at peak load. That is at an O/C of 700/1200. The 4850 runs flawlessly at max O/C via ATI Overdirve.

I got my 4870 in yesterday and put my old HR-03 R600 cooler on it form my HD2900 XT 1gb version and it's tems are similar, 34idle and 44 peak. That is at an O/C of 790/1200 via ATI Overdrive as well. It also runs flawlessly at the max O/C allowed right now in ATI Overdrive.

Can't wait for Riva to get the update out for the RV7 series so I can see how far these cards can really go.
