My computer is ancient, and basically plays Starcraft, UT 2004, and Red Alert 2. Any recommendations for games that might actually play on an old machine (we're talking Athlon Thunderbird 1Ghz, here). The last great game I got to run (barely) was Freespace 2.

Looking for something new. RTS or Space Sim preferred.

If you're looking for RTS and space sim, the game combining both is Homeworld. If you run UT2004, you should also be able to run this one. Also try the add-on, Homeworld: Cataclysm.

Get Freelancer; nice space sim game. It'll keep you entertained for a while. You can even play it online if you wish.

All the blizzard games should work well on your computer. With WarCraft 3 being the closest to trouble. Although not really. Age of Empires 1 and 2. Besides AoE 3 is not worth getting. Valve games that do not use the source engine. Doom 1 and 2. Halo: Combat Evolved.

I had a subnotebook with a 8mb graphics card for a while and it can be fun to play "older" classics Here's some ideas - dig the reviews here and in places like ign to see which you might like best. Strategy (i'm slightly biased to turn based) ============= galactic civilisations myth and myth2 XCOM Disciples & Disciples 2 HoMM3 Warrior Kings O.R.B. (it has a space setting!) shogun total war Space: =========== I second the idea of homeworld, it's old but what a great game! Freespace 2 could be very fun too and in the space style i suspect all the games at http://starwraith3dgames.home.att.net/go.htm would probably run fine There's also X (was the title "beyond hte frontier?") Others: =========== fallout and fallout 2 (rpg) neverwinter nights baldurs gate 2 planescape torment (will look awful but what a game!) system shock 2 (if you can get your hands on it) half life thief 2 hidden and dangerous broken sword (1 and 2) hostile waters (kind of tactical) evil islands (rpg) i could go on and on and on, but since i dont know your spec i'll just stop here

I actually liked the X-WING series better than Freespace. So I will say X-Wing Alliance. I ran it fine on my old T-bird.

Like the others have said, you've got to play Warcraft III and its expansion the Frozen throne. Both excellent games with very high production values

Thanks to all the responses. Warcraft III is the last game my computer was able to run (the demo). I think I'll go back and buy the full version, per everyone's suggestions.

UT 2004 runs, but only at 640*480 and then at a framerate that dips below 28fps.

You can try the following RTS

Warcraft 3+Frozen Throne

C&C Generals + Zero Hour

Homeworld

Homeworld 2

Civilization 3 + Conquests

Conquest Frontier Wars

And for space sims, well you should try Freelancer.

You will be able to run all this games... I mean, I played them all on my old P3 750Mhz, 256 mb RAM and GeForce 4 MX440
