Alright, so he's getting a 580, Rampage III Formula (or should he get the Sabertooth X58) and now we (he) needs a processor that'll keep up, for when he decides to add another 580.

Whats his budget? i7 930 is pretty good. Unless he wants to go Sandy Bridge, but that would require a different motherboard.
Why would he get 2 580s....? As for your question, just go any i7.... (mostly higher range if you can)Alright, so he's getting a 580, Rampage III Formula (or should he get the Sabertooth X58) and now we (he) needs a processor that'll keep up, for when he decides to add another 580.

Sorry, I meant for this to be in the PC Hardware section.
He just wants to be future proofed, I told him a single 580 would be enough for now, so he agress with that but he'll still be getting another 580, I'm sure, down the road somewhere.
He doesn't have a budget. Not really, at least. He just wants it under $450. I don't know much about Intels, as I've only had AMDs but since price wasn't a factor, he's going the Intel route. What should the motherboard be changed to? I mean, the Rampage III Formula's $300, so I'm sure there's better alternatives.

That's what I meant, he doesn't need to.
Just use one 580 until games start lagging, then just get a brand new card on the high end....
Depending on the resolution he's playing at he may or may not need a 2nd 580. I'd get a 2nd one just to be safe to be over the 60fps mark in most games. As for a cpu, the intel sandy bridge stuff should be readily available again shortly. The recall wasn't with the processors, it was with the sata controller on the chipsets being faulty. A core i5 2500K with a slight overclock would probably suit him perfectly for 2 GTX 580's in SLI, although a good sandy bridge board is gonna be in the ballpark of a good x58 board and you get more pci lanes with x58 as well as triple channel ram.

Read what you quoted... He's not getting it now, but "down the road somewhere."
As for the topic at hand, the Rampage III Formula is directed for only the most extreme overclockers and enthusiasts. Unless your friend is a hardcore bencher, or just adamant about getting the highest clocks possible on his processor, the Sabertooth X58 should be more than enough for his needs.

Yeah, thanks. I knew the Sabertooth would have been the better choice. I'm going to replace the motherboard on the list in a few. Oh, and I almost forgot, he wants to get a 120Hz (3D) monitor at about 27" (23.6, if we can't find a 27" available). And, I know using 3D will double the frames, so that's why I suggested a second 580. Right now, all we have left to get is the processor and RAM. I don't know much about Intel processors, as I said before, so which is the best at or under $450?[QUOTE="ravenguard90"]

And read what I wrote please, I said he doesn't need to....just change the card he has down the road....
i5 2500 costs $200.
i7 950 costs $300.
i7 2600 costs $300.
If you're going to spend $300, get the i7 2600. It's miles better than the i7 950.
But the i7 2600 is a Sandy Bridge processor. I thought all Sandy Bridge motherboards have been recalled.i5 2500 costs $200.

I didn't realize that. So, is the Sabertooth motherboard compatible w/ Sandy Bridge processors or do I need to choose another motherboard entirely? If so, which do you suggest? But the i7 2600 is a Sandy Bridge processor. I thought all Sandy Bridge motherboards have been recalled.[QUOTE="ATLReppa770"][QUOTE="kaitanuvax"]

I still don't see any available on newegg.

Oh my bad. I thought it was the CPUs that were recalled, not the motherboards. D'oh.

Yeah.
In any case, it would be wise to wait for the motherboards to come back. It shouldn't be too long from now.

It's up to my friend. He's .. not really a patient type of guy, but I'll let him know.the i5 sandy bridge is better than all the previous i7's, and just as good as the 980x for $800 less. just go with the 2500k, it's all you need.
Not all > I < need, as I'm personally waiting for Bulldozer or Ivy Bridge. As for him, I'll suggest that he waits too. It's his decision, though.the i5 sandy bridge is better than all the previous i7's, and just as good as the 980x for $800 less. just go with the 2500k, it's all you need.
