Reformatting Hard Drive?

A friend of mine told me that reformatting a hard drive will decrease its life span. Is it true?

I highly disagree with that as reformatting will put less load on the harddrive, etc.

I was wondering if you all could comment on this and prove who is the noob in here as I am having a bet with my friend here...

all it does is wipes all the data on the drive, it doesn't affect the life in any way

im going to back up your friend, reformatting killed my laptop. i formatted it once then worked fine did it a few more times then laptop started getting worse till i could format it no more i.e. HDD broke.yoyo462001

That doesn't make any sense though. All formating does is set up a new blank file system (e.g. the NTFS MFT), and a boot sector, and perhaps a scan for bad blocks.

They can also overwrite every sector on the drive, but even still, that is just like a normal write operation, nothing fancy happening to the drive.
