A friend of mine told me that reformatting a hard drive will decrease its life span. Is it true?

I highly disagree with that as reformatting will put less load on the harddrive, etc.

I was wondering if you all could comment on this and prove who is the noob in here as I am having a bet with my friend here...

all it does is wipes all the data on the drive, it doesn't affect the life in any way

He's joking, right? If he believes that, you should also tell him that every time he turns on his comp and obviously accesses his harddrive, he's also decreasing its life span. Both reformatting and accessing the harddrive have the same effect.

That doesn't make any sense though. All formating does is set up a new blank file system (e.g. the NTFS MFT), and a boot sector, and perhaps a scan for bad blocks.

They can also overwrite every sector on the drive, but even still, that is just like a normal write operation, nothing fancy happening to the drive.

I don't think formatting HDD will decrease life time. But it's not any helpful, don't use unless it's needed.
