I need an external HD and am finding a lot of refurbishedTBsin the 70 dollar range. Is a refurbished hard drive a safe purchase or am I better off spending a bit more on a new one?

Seems like you all are paranoid of refurbished HDD's for no given reason. I own a refurbished HDD and have no problems with it.
Yep same here, refurbished items may have scratches, dents or other forms of cosmetic damage which do not affect the performance or quality of the item....Seems like you all are paranoid of refurbished HDD's for no given reason. I own a refurbished HDD and have no problems with it.

[QUOTE="middle-earth88"]Yep same here, refurbished items may have scratches, dents or other forms of cosmetic damage which do not affect the performance or quality of the item.... HDs have an average lifespan of 5 years, not to mention if you do long ~2hour smart tests with something like smartctl in Linux, you will probably find symptoms of failure coming. I got a refurb'd hd once, and it had been powered on 800 times...Seems like you all are paranoid of refurbished HDD's for no given reason. I own a refurbished HDD and have no problems with it.

Well I had a hdd that died then they fixed it, then it seemed to die, suddenly not being detected, but they couldn't find any problems with it and now it does seem to work fine, but I don't trust it any more.Seems like you all are paranoid of refurbished HDD's for no given reason. I own a refurbished HDD and have no problems with it.
