Has anyone else had any experience with buying a refurbished laptop?

I just bought one from Sony, but i'm kind of worried that it'll have cosmetic imperfections caused by the previous owner. I called, and they said they couldn't get information about it's condition, but they said that Sony wouldn't let anyone purchase anything less than "purfect" even refurbished. I'm still not sure, thankfully I have a 30 day warranty.

Never bought a laptop in my life, refurbished or new.

What I don't understand is, you bought the laptop and then called the seller but he cannot give you info about how the laptop looks?

If and when the laptop has been refurbished through Sony itself, then there's not much to fear on the technical side.  The outside might show signs of regular use, like edges that became bald or the odd scratch at the bottom.  Best thing is to look at/ask for pictures of the item before buying...

In my experience Refurbished means that someone got the laptop, used it for a couple of hours/days at the most, found something wrong with it, sent it back to Sony, Sony fixed it and sold it to you. It's probably going to be in close to perfect condition so I wouldn't worry about it. I'd recommend that once you get it, you use it heavily for the first few weeks and see if there's something wrong with it before the warranty runs out.

Sure, that happens a lot too.  My 'experience' with refurbishments is from companies who lease an "x" amount of laptops for a certain period.  Sony (or any brand that does leasing) takes 'em back, does 'em up and sells the lot...

Refurbished rarely means there was a problem, it can mean someone didn't want it, or decided they couldn't afford it. Maybe they opened it and found out it was the wrong one they orderered. Other things could be that they just couldn't work it or it had a tiny little scratch on the "F" button and they wanted a new one. Only rarely does it mean the laptop was faulty and had to be opened up and repaired.

As others say just use it once you get it and make sure everyone is okay. You never know maybe you got the one that had the missing manual and was returned before it was even out the plastic.

Don't worry. Like you said, you've got 30 days to return it if you find a problem. But what model laptop did you get?

Some high-end Sony Vaio... it's in a second topic around here by Bad-School-Girl.

*EDIT*

Here it is.

I can't afford to get things new so I get most of my stuff refurbished/second hand. It's a better deal IMO.
