Sometimes long development times are good things.

I think though that long development times are most often not good for the game. adrake4183
I agree. I'm sure some really awesome things have been cut from games with overly long development cycles because the developers have played through them so often that they've become desensitised to how good they actually are, and don't see them the way fresh eyes might.
Then again, going right back to the drawing board isn't necessarily a bad thing either. I recall reading that Half Life was completely rebooted a year into development, or something. Who knows what awesomeness was lost because of that, but look at what we ended up with.
I can't believe I forgot about Max Payne. That has to be one of the best series ever made.
That video makes me want to play them again...
One of the things I find most impressive about Max Payne is I have never heard someone say they disliked it.
Most other games, even the absolute finest, have no shortage of critics. The Half Lifes, the Fallouts, the System Shocks, The Metal gear Solids, The Grand Theft Autos, StarCraft, Deus Ex - and on and on. But I don't ever remember hearing of someone who didn't like Max Payne. I've heard particular issues raised (some of which I agree with), but I don't think I've ever heard of someone actually disliking the game as a whole, or of someone not being able to appreciate its many qualities.
I don't think I've ever encountered a game that has been met with such absolute praise and is so well respected by so many people (in relation to how many people don't like it, of course), even almost a decade later.
If there's anyone here, reading this, who doesn't like the game - maybe you could tell us why. Then return to your cell and await your 9am firing squad.
