My uncle has an old laptop and there is a password on the bios, I want to fix it for him but I don't know a workaround (he doesn't know the password anymore). Do any of you guys know a method I could use? Thanks.

Just open the computer, remove the BIOS battery for around 30 secs and then place it back in.

Well, you could flash the bios, but you'll need to open the laptop to do that. I suggest you visit the manufacturer website and dl the user manual. Bare in mind that it will reset the BIOS to the default value, so you can be required to dabble in the BIOS settings afterwards. Do this ONLY, and I repeat ONLY if you know your way around the computer hardware and you are certain what you're doing. If not take the laptop to a computer repair shop and let them do it. It shouldn't have to be a big bill for just that.

Its a laptop, the battery will most likely be hid behind the shell and it may very well be soldered to the actual motherboard, so removing it might break the laptop!

Sorry OP but thats going to be very difficult to fix.

Another important distinction is whether it's a BIOS password or a hard drive password - if the latter, you pretty much have to reformat it AFAIK. There's probably something to crack the BIOS (and as mentioned, resetting the BIOS will do the trick), but I've never tried cracking a BIOS password - always just reset the CMOS.

If it is a windows machine the default password is "ntlives" for 99% of them. I think some manufactures changed this but its definitely worth a try. Also you might google for other common bios passwords. I used to know dell's but can't remember at the moment.

SAGE_OF_FIRE

You could remove the hard drive and plug it in to another computer. That would let you format the drive. The bios password is not related to your harddrive however. The bios resides in the motherboard, you can think of it as the little bit of software that starts up the harddrive. Hence even if you format your harddrive you would still have to deal wiht the bios password.

be sure to try some of the common passwords, you'd be suprised how many people use them.

123, 111, 000, 999, 1234, 123456, 123456, password, 12345678, lifehack, qwerty, abc123, 111111, monkey, consumer, 12345, 0, letmein, and trustno1.
