Hello! How do I rename the C drive and D drive on Windows XP? I presume it shouldn't be too hard! Thanks so much!

Well what do you mean by this?

Like you want to swap drive letters? or you want to literally rename it from Local Disk to something else?

I want to change "C" to something else. I want to change "D" to something else. So instead of: C:\Program Files ...it would be: New name:\Program Files

There has to be a letter with each drive so no you can't change the drive letter you can cange the name though instead of "Local Disk" it could say some thing else and to do that you would just right click and rename.

Right click "My computer". Select "Manage"

In the Computer management, chose "Disk management". It is located under Storage

Right click on the drive you want to change, and select "Change drive letter and paths". Change the letter.

BUT:

1) You cannot change the drive letter of your boot drive

2) Changing the drive letter on the D: probably will break all programs on that. since icons, and registry entries will point to the old drive.

It is relatively safe to change the letter on DVD drives, and empty hard disk drives. Also if you D: drive only holds music, movies and documents, it should be doable. But any programs should be uninstalled first, and then reinstalled after the change.

Best advise, don't do it unless you have very compelling reasons to do so.

Ohh forgot - the SUBST command will allow you to access your drive under another name. But it won't change it.

Example: c:\>subst U: C:\

Would give you an U: drive that is really just the C: drive.

So as long as I don't use any programs running off the D drive, I'm okay to change the drive name for D? I only have word documents, music files, and other backup file types on my D: drive. So this should be okay to access them from the D drive after I make this change? The subst command....is this sort of like spoofing a drive letter to access it? Or how does it work?

he's not completely wrong, you are. You said drive name which you do as was described. You want to change a drive letter and that is completely different.

plus, why would you want to change the drive letter from c? thats not even possible if you are booting from it.

Hmm...so I can't change the boot drive. Fine. But what about THIS! Say if I set the boot drive to be the D drive temporarily, then as I boot up, I'd change the C drive's name to something else, and then change the boot drive back C after I do that, and then change the D drive's name. How would that work out!?

the C: drive contains the boot files in which where the computer will look for when u turn it on. that's also the default location and if u mess around with that path, u won't be able to boot.

Alright then...I'll scrap the concept of changing the drive names. How do I add more space into the D drive from the C drive? I have 50 gigabytes on the C drive, but I only have 4 gigabytes on the D drive. I want to add some space from the C drive to the D drive, so the D drive can store more data. How can I do this? ^_^

  • first, how many hard drives do u have?
  • if u have one hard drive, u can use windows disk management to resize ur partitions (windows vista only)
  • if u have two hard drives [C] and [D] - ur gonna have to upgrade ur second hard drive [D] if u want to store more data. if u don't wanna upgrade, ur gonna have to delete some files in order to make more room.
  • if u r not running vista, ur gonna have to get a third party software to partion ur hard drive
  • or u can always buy external hard drives

All drives have to be lettered you can't change the "C" into something like "Bacon", you can change between other letters.
