Although Windows 7 has been praised for loading and shutting down faster than prior versions of Windows, one software company says that, in many cases, the new operating system can take longer to get started than Windows Vista.

Iolo Technlogies, which sells PC tune-up software, said its lab unit found that a brand-new machine running Windows 7 takes a minute and 34 seconds to become usable, as compared to a minute and 6 seconds for Windows Vista. Iolo notes that it measured not the time it takes for the desktop to appear--which can be as little as 40 seconds on a fresh installation of Windows 7--but rather the time it takes to become fully usable "with CPU cycles no longer significantly high and a true idle state achieved."

Yeah, uh-huh.:| I'm sure it was every bit as objective as Symantec's "ground-breaking" report that Norton outperformed Microsoft Security Essentials.

Eh....it doesn't bother me one bit.

I can boot my computer and have it fully functional (as lolo Technology says "with CPU cycles no longer significantly high and a true idle state achieved.") in about 15 seconds.

I run Vista 64. It's so nice to turn on my PC, within 4-5 seconds the desktop pops on and after about 10-12 seconds later my programs have loaded and I'm good to go and start doing whatever I need to.

I disagree with that article.

7 boots up faster and shuts down faster than Vista. I had been using a dual boot setup and 7 is faster, at least with my hardware.

I've now ditched Vista all together and have 7 for both boots (Normal and DAW)

I wouldnt recommend your shut down plan. Also Windows, well at least Vista, needs to be restarted every so often or else it starts to get really slow

Yea I know you shouldnt turn the computer off like that, I was just making fun of people caring about how fast their pc shuts down... And yea, but really if your only restarting every few days, what is an extra few seconds gonna do?

Im with u - I rarely shut down my computer as well - especially if ur the type who is on ur PC atleast 3 times a day. That can really hammer ur HDD.. and also - how frustrating to boot-up, shutdown, oops forgot something - boot up, shutdown -- need to send an email - dang it . . . etc . .

Actually that's how my dad used to shut down the computer at our house: if he was too tired he would just shut off the surge protector...it's worse that he probably new better than to do that.

Vista used to start fast on my laptop now it's ungodly slow :(

Clean up your starting program list with msconfig in the run menu.

The thing i'v noticed about not sutting down your computer for a long time is it uses up ram space. When i'm not useing my computer a put it in stand by ( low power state) and after the days end 42% of my 4 gigs of ram is being used up while compared to a fresh boot up only 31% of my ram is being used. I havent had my computer on full power any more than a day because I have a power hungry system and i like to save some energy lol

Then again, he could just be running 1 GB RAM, unlikely in 2009, but Ive seen it with some people. Oh yeah, and uninstalling whatever crappy internet security program he has and installing MSE helps too.

7 is faster than Vista ever was for me, that is, when Vista booted. I had to format several times before I got 7 because Vista would never get past the screen with the green loading bar. The progress went normal for about 4-5 cycles of the bar, then screeched to a halt so slow that you could watch an individual bar load from the top down. Oh, and even leaving it on it never actually booted up. Long story short, Vista holds a very special (i.e. BAD) place in my heart.

i bet 7 will get better loads in couple weeks;

i however am privileged to still be using XP (lulz), and I take a slow boot screen as cue for a fresh format. its

one of the best features windows has put into a os imo.

I've got E6600 3GB Ram Dedicated HDD for Vista I got it down to about 2minute boot time after uninstalling all my Internet Security Suites (and reducing processes after startup from 80 to less than 40). I have been testing out Kaspersky and it's back up to 3+minutes. NOD32 is next on my list after my 30days expires.

I had that problem occur with me, too. My motherboard was faulty - it wasn't working correctly with video drivers (maybe bad 780 chip or a bad PCI-E port....or something). My problem was that I couldn't get video drivers to install correctly - usually I locked up in the process. The couple of times the drivers did load, I would either be able to boot into Vista (only to have it lock up withing 30 seconds) or the load bar would start up and eventually turn into a slow crawl and never boot me into windows. I reformatted countless times and re-installed Vista just as many times....nothing I did solved my problem. So, I got a replacement MB and things work perfect now. I also had this problem one time before when trying to get a older slave IDE hard drive to run. For some reason Vista just would not boot - load bar would show up and turn into a crawl and never boot into windows. To solve this issue, I stopped trying to boot with my old hard drive (no, there was no OS installed on it, it was just a storage hard drive - had music, videos and such). Problem is, if you don't know where the problem is, you could be trouble shooting your situation for some time.

I don't really understand the obsession with load times but on my triple boot system :

XP 28 sec

Win 7 35 sec

Vista 42 sec

I am counting the time windows takes to load (strating with the boot menu until the hourglass disappears). If it takes 2 or 3 minutes there is something wrong with your system.

If a slighty longer boot time means a secure, feature rich, yet less bloated system with a user-friendly interface, I think the "sacrifice" is irrelevant. This is just some company trying to dupe people into buying products they don't need.

I agree with the article. I had a 3-week old Vista 64-bit OS on my system that was fully updated and it loaded faster than my week old Windows 7 (also fully updated).

Nothing huge, but it's about 15 sec longer.

You made a claim about people being duped into buying unneccesary software. I just said that windows 7 falls into the same category. Never said you were talking about windows 7.

As time goes by a new OS is necessary, infact it becomes mandatory because of new hardware. today we dont see anyone running Windows 95 or 98, because the hardware we have today would not run properly, sure they could run a few updates here and there but thats not how things are. I've used XP for a long time, I've used also Vista since the very first day it launched. and i am currently on Windows 7 Ultimate (my vista was ultimate too) I've installed XP so many times in my life that i memorized the cd key without even trying to memorize it. From my personal experience, XP isnt even my reccomended OS unless you have outdated hardware everyone has 64bit dual core processors DDR2 RAM ect. those should be going to windows 7, skip vista, i've been a fan of vista since launch and never had any problems till recently a week ago i installed windows 7 and i must say, it blew me away at how much better the performance is over vista, feels so much cleaner and smoother to me. and deffinately boots up a lot faster than vista i dont see why people have such slow boot times its not the OS its your computer. I reccomend anyone to get windows 7 as a primary OS there really is no need for XP anymore, if you have to have some kind of software application that wont run on windows 7, well win7 has a virtual xp

deffinately boots up a lot faster than vista i dont see why people have such slow boot times its not the OS its your computer. bunny569

How can you say that? How do you know it was not your hardware making Vista boot slower than Win7.

While I have not tried Vista on my own PC, from the PC's I have used with it I cannot tell the differnce in boot time between them and my Win 7 RC I have on my PC. Maybe if I used a stopwatch one would be a few seconds faster, but who knows.

I've used both Windows 7 and Vista quite a bit and while the startup times are drastically different for me, I'd still say that 7 is a tad faster, and as for shutting down, I'd say 7 is definitely faster.

Were you counting based off of watching task manager to see when your CPU usage dropped to absolutely zero? I'm betting these guys picked a somewhat odd metric (that instead of the point where your desktop is usable) to give a certain result - especially when they're talking about minute and a half startup times.
