If you can't max a game out, would you have the game at a higher resolution with settings turned off/low or the game on a low resolution with most settings on/high?

It depend, if you have a lcd, I would alway try to get the native resolution, otherwise the game will look like crap.

I have a laptop with an 8600m gt which is hardly powerful so i usually get round this by playing in a window with everything cranked.

The window is usually 960 x 600 on a 1440x900 external samsung display which isn't too bad.(i.e it isnt too small a window on a 19")

A lot of the games I play, I can pretty much max out anyway - orange box, tombraider aniversary/legend even at 1680x1050 on my lappy screen but the majority are run in a window.

on my CRT back in the day i would have dropped the res to keep the settings up. but with LCDs its the other way around for me. playing at non naitive on most panels is not a pleasent experience.

I have a 20" LCD monitor so 1650x1050 is usually a must or it becomes blurry/pixelated, tho there are exceptions.

Right now i use a 12x10 lcd and will lower the res to 800x600 to keep the setting high. Just looks like pixelated standard def.

I can live with lowered settings, but one thing I can't tolerate is low resolution.

Even when I had a CRT I would choose resolution over graphical settings. Just looks better overall.
