I am contemplating whether or not to buy a new monitor. Right now I have a 17inch that plays at a max resolution of 1280-1024 and I am thinking of stepping it up to a 22inch widescreen monitor with a max res. of 1680-1050. Would there be much of a difference in image quality between the two?

Probably won't notice a huge jump in quality, but you definitely will love the extra size. Even going from 19" to 22" was awesome for me. Just make sure your gfx card can handle the bump in resolution as well, going over 1280x1024 really makes a performance hit on older cards with newer games.

Widescreen DVDs: Yes

Games: Yes

The only thing that will look worse are videos at lower resolution, since they will have to stretch out even more. Go for it anyway, though. You probably wont regret it.

get a 19" widescreen monitor..A lot better. I use to have two 19' LCDS(non widescreen) and I prefer 1 19" widescreen to a 19" 4:3 screen. Most games look better,  and moives DEF look better.
