AMD Radeon HD 4890 CrossFire

Introduction

Today AMD announced their Radeon HD 4890 Series. It is based on the RV790 GPU which is an improved version of the RV770. The major cornerstone specifications have remained the same, only improvements related to clock frequencies have been made. While it was almost impossible to get an RV770 to run far beyond 800 MHz, the ATI HD 4890 reference runs at 850 MHz core by default. Many partners will be offering overclocked boards as well ranging up to 1000 MHz core speed.

Since we managed to acquire two HD 4890 samples for our testing, we decided to bring you a multi-GPU performance review for the first time.

If you consider yourself a good artist, you may also want to check out our Create your own ATI high-end graphics card contest.

HD 4890 CrossFire is available on any AMD or Intel chipset motherboard that has two PCI-Express slots. After installing the cards you need to put both CrossFire bridges across the CF connectors, hook up the power and you are ready to go.

Once the drivers are up and running, you will be greeted by a message from ATI's Catalyst Control Center, that a CrossFire compatible configuration has been detected and that it would be best if you enabled CrossFire. This whole process is remarkably easy and even less experienced users will be able to do it. In case there is a problem CCC will notify you and present possible solutions.

Guys who go Crossfire with this HD4890 will find Win at 1680x1050 or higher resolutions :P

*GTX275 benchmark numbers included within the review

fact of the matter also is we can push it further to 990mhz core clock and 4600mhz gddr5 1gb! along with them 800 SP's in crossfire this card fairs very well, yes i like ati, id like to try nvidia one day, but ati are hitting nvidia hard with performance/buck, and performance as a whole. go ati!

With lots of water cooling and some serious volt modding you could get a 4870 to the speed of a 4890

im really jealous :( i need money to buy this card ahhhhhhhhhh, and the guy about serious volt modding and watercooling, for those who dont have a 4870, and are looking to upgrade im pretty sure theyre going to choose the 4890 because of its overclockability which it can do with ease, no "serious" messing about it seems, if 1ghz core and 4600-4800mhz 1gb gddr5 is anything to go by which most sites have achieved by just changing stuff in CCC, just wait for HiS's IceQ coolers, it'll be awesome.

on alot of other reviews iv seen it sometimes beats the GTX 285 and most of the time is generally more powerful than the GTX 275

Those are some good crossfire results! are they alot better than the % gain you get with 2 4870's compared to 1 4870 though?
