Sorry if old news, I just heard of it.

I don't think F2P is because an MMO failed, I think it's just the way MMOs NEED to go these days with so much competition and when they don't have a big name behind them.

Game pretty much dropped off the face of the Earth not long after release. When's the last time anyone mentioned it here, or among your friends? I'll probably Check it out again for the lulz. Was in the beta fora bit way back when, felt exactly like a WoW/WAR rip, but it was well made nonetheless.

It's not really free to play. It does the exact same thing WoW is currently doing. Heard about it before.

Didn't the population drop significantly a few months ago? Didn't they slash the price of the game to $5 to entice people to play it?

Pay to play is dead these days, it seems.

It's not really "F2P". Like Kh1ndjal said, WoW already has this same model where you can play a limited number of levels for free.

It's more like a limited free demo of the game, really.

RIFT is probably not doing great but from what I read and hear it's fairly popular as MMO's go at the moment so I don't think this is a move that's being made from a position of weakness. But going forward I find it hard to see how RIFT is going to make itself relevant in a world with Guild Wars 2.

By the same token Starcraft 2 must be doing poorly since it's rarely discussed outside dedicated forums. MMOs and strategy games seem to generate less discussion on general game forums. I've also seen little mention of Portal 2...

RIFT has over 1 million subscribers; as far as we know it's doing fine. I thought it was a solid game myself.

Twenty dollars/euros on Steam... seems normal to me. Even if it had went F2P it could very well have been far from dying.

They're all going F2P. It's just a matter of time, for World of Warcraft being aswell.

Just as other MMOs like EVE or LotRO get by; they carve out their own niches.

It's really the same as WoW's. They pulled in a 100 million dollar proifit last year and have a very stable player base. The MMO hasn't failed, it's just doing things to keep a nice solid playerbase and income.

It's a lot of fun. I've been playing it for over a month now.

Rift is probably the best MMO released in recent years. I played all major titles and Rift held my interest the longest, and I might consider resubscribing when I get tired of SWTOR. I think this might be a smart move to tempt more players into trying it, especially those who have felt too tied up with other games to give it a chance. It's worth a shot for anyone with even the slightest interest in MMOs.

WoW has a big F2P level 20 twink community. I wonder if a similar thing will spring up in Rift.

For those who don't read:

"Entitled RIFT Lite, the new F2P version is available to both new and returning players with no time limit or credit card required. The Lite version features "certain restrictions to travel and gameplay", but apart from that, you're good to experience much of what RIFT has to offer."

An extended trial. This is good news, I really feel it is a far superior alternative to the timed trials.
