No ...
EDIT: Hell no !
Well ... if you want to play a hibrid of WoW and a project aiming for "hey let's try persistent world dynamic events" then umm, yeah it's worth buying it ... playing it for the free 30 days and then canceling the subscription ... that's what I did ...
Rift was very fun until I hit 50 which(at release) took about a week. After that the new car smell kind of wears off and I havent touched it since. The endgame is pretty bad. IxX3xil3d0n3XxIThere have been major updates since then. The game has progressed a lot.

SpellingiscoolThere have been major updates since then. The game has progressed a lot. I've been keeping tabs on it cause I think I quit around 1.2 or 1.3. The only thing I'm mildly interested in is the alternate advancement system that will hopefully come out in 1.5(?)
I think that EVERYONE (new and old players alike) can play Rift for FREE August 25th-31st, NO limitations at all. The normal trial is capped at 15, which isn't far enough to see a lot of things. So if you're curious, might as well give it a shot on the 25th, it's free, with no trial limitations.
That's just an ignorant statement. The game does not play at all like Warhammer, whether or not you liked or disliked it is not relevant in the slightest. The two games could not be more different.Did you like Warhammer Online? It runs on the same clunky ugly engine..

Read through the posts in this thread and want to point 2 things out. I'm playing Rift @ endgame cintent atm.
1. The comment about it runs like Warhammer Online, you have no clue that you're talking about. Rift looks miles better than WH, while also running much more stable. I play with everything maxed out and only get fps drops and hickups in some raid rifts where there is a sever amount of explosions and spell effects (life rifts seems to be most demanding). It's a very well optimized game if you ask me.
2. Endgame content. I didn't play rift during the beta or the first couple of months. I don't know how it was then, but I'm a former WOW player and I'm enjoying the lvl 50 content. There's lots of fun raid encounters etc, and since the game really promotes playing multiple roles it's very easy to put variation into what you do in dungeons/raids.
To TC: I definitely think you should try Rift.
Actually the two engines (WAR and Rift) are very similar in terms of looks and problems. By that I mean they both heavily over-utilize the CPU (my CPU pegs both cores and my GPU sits at 60% or less on a 260GTX), have terrible draw distance (very noticeable in the Defiant starter zone), and have issues with shadows and FSAA. I don't know if they use the same engine, but other than better textures and particle effects they look very similar IMOSerOlmyI played Warhammer for 2 years, I just didn't see it when I played Rift. Besides as I said already the two games are world's apart as far as gameplay goes, there is no comparison. One is a pvp/rvr game, the other is a pve game with crap pvp thrown in as a second thought.
If you want a WoW clone, a true WoW clone, then RIFT is your game. It'll grow stale after awhile.

I just cannot stomach these comments, the game is no more a WoW clone than any other MMO to come out since WoW. It took the good things from WoW and kept them or improved them, why wouldn't it? It also took from other MMO's and threw it all into one package.
Look, the game was only worth 3 months of my time, but I will still speak out against this "wow clone" myth that keeps getting spread around. People who want to see WoW in Rift will find WoW in Rift. The game is good for a few months and a few end game dungeon runs, after that bleh.
Calling it a WoW clone is just a shallow insult at this point. Graphics are different, the world and lore is 100% unique and original, the class system is nothing like WoW, last time I checked WoW had no Rifts or world invasions. So I would love for someone to explain to me exactly how this is a WoW clone.

It is a wow clone because it plays and is set up exactly the same, exactly. Any one who can't see it being a wow clone is blind IMO. To bad it copied but managed to be boring and just worse then wow in every way except the class builD system. Rift for me is one of the worst games I have ever played, and ieven enjoyed dc universe for a month or two. I still play wow but am tired of the carrot on s stick gameplay and may give up on mmo,S FOr good. It's a WoW clone without Rifts. Aside from that, it plays like WoW. It got stale after a month. I really don't care if you agree with me or not, but it reminded me too much of WoW to keep playing it.
I just Googled it. Both Rift and WAR use modified versions of Gamebryo so they are essentially the same engine. So I would like to repeat my argument that visually they have the same issues. The most annoying being terrible draw distance - any open areas with sparse trees and rock formations like the Defiant starting zone have bad object and texture pop-in, this kills immersion for me in games. And they are both terribly CPU hungry, again it pegs me dual-core CPU and barely utilizes my 260GTX (2 generations out of date!), which is very irritating since I would get MUCH better performance if it were utilizing my GPU more heavily.SerOlmyDude, the two games are nothing alike and despite using the same engine the art is completely different. I have yet to be stuck on a rock in Rift. If you have played Warhammer you know what that statement means. The issues you are bringing up are irrelevant for most people, the game can still be fun with the trivial matters you keep posting about.
I just don't know how something with so many different features can be called a WoW clone. I gave specific examples that differentiate it from WoW, I have yet to see anything other than anecdotal evidence from the other side. Saying it reminded you of WoW does not make it a WoW clone.
Look, opinions are one thing, unsubstantiated ones are another. I am just asking for some real dialogue here as to how this is a WoW clone, I have yet to see anything to back that claim up.
well...thnx all...i decided to give it a try....now for the trial....should i download the game from its homepage?
No Rift. As people have said, it most definitley is a WoW clone. Wait for ToR.
Elaborate. You only have to look at the screenshots and videos to clearly see that it borrows from WoW in almost every department as most MMOs do.well...thnx all...i decided to give it a try....now for the trial....should i download the game from its homepage?

By the way, isn't the WoW clone argument getting really old already? I'm so tired to see it no matter what MMORPG we're talking about. Rift is a good game, if you are exhausted of the genre or never liked it, that's a different story.

Then perhaps developers shoudn't just copy WoW in everything they do, hm?
Rift isn't a bad game, but some of us don't want everything copied from WoW with a splash of a developer's own creativity.

You don't magically become unique by just adding a few new features. Not when you copy 90% of the game from another developer. So they added Rifts and a robust skill-tree/class system. Everything else is pretty similar when compared to WoW. Which, if that's your cup of tea, is great. As I said in my previous post, some of us want different. Different enough not to remind us of the days we wasted playing other games.

No game comes closer to copying the game mechanics nearly as much as Rift does, however, they don't do it better, and in some instances it is worse. I played Rift immediately on release, I am a power-gamer type and PvPer, obviously, this game wasn't for me. I still say the game is an 8/10 and might be worth your time if you like WoW-esque MMO's. It is getting tired that you can't see the similarities between the two, they are completely overt. Anyway, if I had to make a recommendation, I would say to skip it. Yes, you may get 100 hours played, but at the end of those 100, you will likely just go "That was kind of a waste of time".Please Log In to post.
