I tried taking my system over to my mom's because she needed to work on some documents for her employer and she doesn't have a working system. I loaded my comp into the box I go from my case and started hauling it towards the stairs. The moment I turned the box around to get it down, the bottom of the box broke open and my system went for a flight. The motherboard, graphic cards, and case all have cracks so I didn't bother checking to see if they work. The RAM, PSU, ODD, and water cooler are okay. Two HDD's are screwed though I'll likely replace them all just to be safe. Not sure if the CPU is damaged until I have a compatible MB to test it on. It's unfortunate that CaseLabs doesn't make boxes as good as their cases. Anyone else have a computer horror story to tell? It might help me feel better.

Edit: Sig updated with new system.

Oh.. oh God. That is just.. awful. Your rig was a beast too, if it was the one in your sig. I wish I had a story to offer, but I can only offer my condolences.

Yes, it is the rig in my sig. I was going to replace the graphic cards with something from nVidia anyway. This gives me an excuse. Kind of depressing considering I just built it.

One time I dropped a screw driver on a diamond stealth 2mb graphics card and broke one of the leads.

Another time I accidentally plugged in my printer into a scsi port and my scanner into the parallel port, smoke e'rywhere, I broke something, I don't recall what, probably the printer.

I'm sorry to hear that :(. Is there any chance that the case is repairable? It's very saddening to see such a nice case get destroyed.

You might be able to RMA the hard drives if Seagate is kind enough. I accidentally dropped one of my HDD's a while back when I was moving them between rooms, and Western Digital was kind enough to replace it despite me explaining that the damage was entirely my fault.

The MB tray is slightly pushed in. It would be hard to repair so it's usable. I might call Seagate tomorrow and ask if they'd replace the drives. I buy enough of their products. For now I'm going to use my Level 10 GT until I can get around to buying a new case. Maybe CaseLabs can modify another Magnum and give it handle bars or something. I should've known better than to put such a heavy system into that box without making sure the bottom was secured.

I'm sorry to hear that.. but you should ALWAYS tape down your boxes with super-strong tape. Not the cheap masking tape either. The clear super sticky tape they use for packages. I've packaged a few heavy gaming PC's in a huge box and they hold well. Never had issues. Sorry about your PC though. Expensive lesson learned.

Nope, I don't use credit cards unless I have to buy online. Only the motherboard and case are recent.

The thing is that the box was for my case. It's what they shipped it in. The case itself is all metal so I thought the box would be sufficiently taped. I think the box bottom was somehow damaged during or after the case was removed. Transportation is the main reason I wanted carry handles on my next case but I figured I could just use the box it came in to movie it around.

I guess I'm lucky. The worst thing I can tell is when I overclocked my first video card after a few minutes my computer died and I smelled burnt plastic coming from my pc. Not a major issue but at the time I didn't know much about pcs but after I stopped freaking out I figured I'd burnt out my video card and replaced it that day. Never been a fan of overclocking since then :P

my previous PC, fluffy, died under mysterious circumstances. fluffy was my almost money no object project....decency and common sense out the window. the processor alone was 900 euro. the graphics card (the legendary 8800GTX) was also an insane price. dam fine rig. it was 3 years old when it went (and still didnt need an upgrade :D). i had to leave it for a few weeks. it was fine when i left...running like a champ. but when i came back it failed to POST. after swapping out various components with no luck i decided it was just chasing good money after bad and built mittens. after all the chaos i thought it was just the GPU in the end and i had used poor troubleshooting methodology (see blog). as it turned out though trying various other parts of fluffy in other computers later on showed that nearly every single component of it was dead. the CPU was fried. the RAM was busted. only the HDD and disc drive remain (well and the case :P). im guessing it was hit by lightening. its very rare where i live but it can happen. i cant think of anything else that would cause nearly every component to fail. but its hard to say for certain.

I have insurance. It doesn't cover these types of damages. It would cover my computer if it were lost in a disaster but not something that was my fault.

My cat knocked a beer off of my desk last night and it missed falling into the top of my tower by about an inch. I had a heart stopping moment and thought of this thread. My cat is no longer allowed on my desk, and my tower is further away from it!

When I move my desktop PCs, I generally don't use a box.

For games console like mobility with desktop PC gaming performance, I have assembled Mini-ITX based gaming PC i.e. refer to my Silverstone SG-07.

As for RIP PC subject, my year 2007 era ASUS G1S gaming laptop suffered a NVIDIA's infamous "bumpgate" failure. Luckily, I have 2 years warranty on the said product i.e. ASUS exchanged it with year 2008 G1SN model.

I do know of a story of $~10,000 rack server melt down after the aircon failure during the summer temps.

The only kind of glass that its allowed on my desk is a empty glass so I hope something like that never happens to me, although my desk is large so the PC is pretty much out of harms way in case of a spill. Though I have spilled apple juice on my keyboard several times and its a nightmare cleaning it it gets all sticky.

My friend finally has my new system up and running. I'm glad that most of the parts weren't damaged. If these EVGA cards perform well then I doubt I'll even upgrade to the Kelper. Hopefully my Bigwater 760 can keep them cool at default clocks.

Man that is terrible. I have long arms so I tend to carry even my full tower, 55lb Cosmos-S under my right arm. No boxes, just careful placement so it doesn't get scratched up. I've been to hundreds of lan parties and never dropped anything yet. I've come close on icy paths but not close enough. My friend though...he's dropped every PC he has at least once.

He used to run his PCs without any case panels because they all broke and bent and couldn't be put back on. Like the last 3 computers he had, this has happened. Even a laptop. And a Blackberry...Doesn't even secure the hard drvies either. Everything is just flopping around. He also slipped off his snow covered deck while carrying a 21" CRT monitor. He threw it in the air and it landed on his chest. I never saw it, but he ended up dragging the monitor through the snow by the VGA cable to his destination. It was hilarious.

One thing that happened to me, it doesnt really compare to what happened to the OP but when I built my first system, my CPU was overheating so I went to take off the cooler so I could re-apply the thermal paste. However, When I took the cooler off, the CPU came off with it and somehow I bent some of the pins. It was only an Athlon X2 5600 but at the time it was a decent CPU and with the money I was getting at the time, it was expensive to replace. With my current rig, I had the pain of spending the hours into building it, only to turn it on and for it to not post, it would kinda turn on for a split second then turn off. It would repeat this process untill the switched at the back was off. Luckly though, it was just a case of the motherboard ATX connector being too loose.

Chris_53
With amd boards you can just stick pins in the mobo and it will work.
