I haven't played RoN, so I can't say anything about that.
I played both War3 and AoM extensively. War3 is pretty solid and you probably can still play against peeps online. I really liked vanilla AoM, but I found that with the expansion, it just becamse a race for a titan, which was lame. AI skirmish in AoM is better than War3s, but the support for multiplayer battles is better for War3.
For the campaigns, I preferred playing out the AoM campaign a bit more, but the War3 cinematics are pretty sweet.
When it comes down to it, it's a matter of setting and what you want to play (AI + campaign vs. online + cool CG vids).
Anything but warcraft 3Kreugh
Why?
War3 is the uber game I've ever played... the options are limitless, and the fantasy setting is simply superb. Unique units & abilities to each race makes it definately the most entertaining game to play and watch.
I haven't played AoM, but I did play War3 and RoN. If you want a colourful, silly little game, for for War3. RoN was much more advanced and actually involved tactics and strategy. In addition to that, War3 was the same game each time --> kill everyone else. The Campaign was okay, i guess, including the expansion, and as an RPG fan I enjoyed the leveling up . . . but there's more to an RTS than that.
RoN had actual balance, a very good technology tree, good resources, wonders, and a very vast, yet easy to master GUI.
One thing I hated about many RTS games is that if you bring a worker in someone else's territory you could just build some towers and a barracks or whatever right in there. That is pretty weak. In RoN you had territory which can grow according to several different ways.
There were countless teams with bonuses and unique units, compared to War3 which had, what, 4 different races (human alliance, orcs, night elves, undead)?
In addition to all of that, RoN had so many different types of games, the conquor the world game was so much more fun than anything I did in War3.
I'd rather play BFME or BFME2 over War3. (and I was a huge war2 fan, btw, i'm just not a blizzard fanboy) Age of Empires II was a great game as well, but I didn't play Age of Empires III. (didn't seem interesting enough)
