Ive been lookin around for a router and does anyone know the difference between a router, gateway, and switch? I just want to make sure Im getting the thing I really need.

Sometimes a lot of these terms are thrown around and misused. Most of the time, gateways are essentially routers. Routers connect to your broadband internet and distributes the signal to whatever computer or device is connected to the router either by ethernet or wirelessly. A switch or hub connects multiple computers or devices to a network. A router usually does everything a switch/hub does, but is more sophisticated. A router is what usually people use to connect computers/devices to share a broadband connection.

I'm not 100% sure about the above, as the terms are thrown around a lot as I said, but the router explanation is correct.

When someone says gateway they are typically referring to a router. Every home should have a home router if you ask me. - easily share your internet connection - one more layer of security (firewall + address translation) - wireless optional!
