So I'm still playing Dragon Age. While overall a great game, as my level gets higher I realized that it suffers from some of the same flaws as every other RPG. They all reward you with crap more often than not. It's almost humiliating to go through a long difficult battle where it is 4 of you againt 20 or more enemies. Then when it is over, everything you loot from the scene is crap. Why give me a weapon that is much weaker than anything already in my inventory? Or why give me weak armor? Or weak potions. etc. etc. I wish RPG games would feel more rewarding after spending alot of time on some parts. I want to trade up, not trade down, otherwise there isn't much incentive. They all have this problem (although I think Bethesda is the worst offender with the Elder Scrolls or Fallout 3 games.)

So true, you really do get rewarded with a lot of crap in RPGs, whats the point really.

Well yeah, but bethesda always asked from the player to have a high level so he could use weapons and armors more effectively, rather give you better weapons and armor!!

JRPGs...."almost" all of them don't even have items, you get a few ones from the story. A JRPG is severely limited when it comes to items. What DA:O has is heaven compared to a JRPG. If you might think that I hate JRPGs, well I don't but really, JRPGs and items or loot have nothing in common.

I think Dragon Age worked out the money/store system very well. Often times playing an RPG, the stores don't have anything you need because you find all the good stuff killing people and you end up beating the game a millionaire. But that would be the tradeoff in offering crappy items for quests.

How is Borderlands in this regard? I haven't played it, but the reviews I read suggest that it has a better reward system.

Reward system in borderlands is the best I have seen yet. I am talking a complete a huge Dungeon, get to ending and get atleast one garunteed 'epic' piece of gear + a couple decents and Heroric. quest are also nice as they give you cash which, if you build them up, can go to the shoppies and look at teh 'one time sale', which usually is either a very effective decent weapon or Heroric. I have so far only seen one 'epic'.

Wouldn't it be strange if every single enemy carried a better weapon than you already own? You are a mighty hero, they are just part of a mob.

You spend most of your time fighting 'grunts' in RPGs. You expect them to have fantastic gear? You have an unreasonable expectation. Go fight the High Dragon.

farrell2k

Did I say grunts? No. I said on the larger, harder battles. And then there are sidequests that are pointless because they also reward you with crap. I did already kill a high dragon. And instead of rewarding me with a little crap, it rewarded me with a bunch of crap.

Really, how could have you played this game and not agree that I make a vaild point? Do you mean to tell me that after a long difficult battle you say to yourself "wow, look at all this worthless crap I get. how cool."?

Did I say I expected every enemy to have an awesome reward? No I did not. C'mon people, don't put words into my mouth. But c'mon, you gotta agree that these games do need to have better rewards when you complete quests, sidequests, or any boss of some sort.

play diablo or borderlands then, it has gives way better loot as you go along. dragon age isn't totally about the loot, it's about strategy and skills. also stores have pretty much everything but the rarest of items

Sheesh. I don't know why people don't read or insist on putting words into my mouth. I know Dragon Age isn't all about the loot. I'm not a RPG noob. But still, a gamer ought to feel rewarded (with more than just experience points) after beating a difficult boss or after completing quests.

"Go play Diablo." Ha ha, funny guy. Don't be such a smart***. The game's over 10 years old, don't you think that I might have already played it? But even Diablo rewarded me with a bunch of worthless crap.

Well, I kinda agree, because I used the set from the DLC (Warden's Keep) for about 3 full cities, now I use the Dragon Armor (the special one which is tied to ME2), but I don't really feel that it needs more items.

Also, about Borderlands, don't get it for loot, don't believe anything, it has only a few weapons, that get reskinned over and over again, it basically has no diversity when it comes to weapons (it's pretty decent, but it's basic like any other shooter with a few weapons (like Mass Effect for example), not what they advertised)

I think Dragon Age does this on purpose. EA sells all kind of item-based dlc for few bucks. like for exmaple, Ring with +1 all stat. Now imagine, you get this kind of item as a quest reward while finishing up one of main quest.

would you go to EA store and pay them $2 to $5 ? EA will be very very unpleasnt, in fact, very mad if they find out that player won't buy their "awesome" items for $2 just because you can get them easily by finishing quest. so they must have forced the bioware to make game in that direction.

It's probably meant for balance. All the best weapons and armor are either in pre-set locations, tied to quests, or in shops. I would be pretty pissed if i went through a playthrough as a 2-handed warrior, hoping to get a specific weapon and armor, and they never dropped at the end of that long dungeon.

Generic NPC: " Dear bold adventurer, my son is sick and I ask of you to go to the harrowing swamp of Bogmire and achieve the stone of eclipse from the mutant one eyed ogre of one thousand dooms, then travel across the land to the forgotten deeps of the oogy boogy woods to retrieve the chalice of ultimate sacrifice from the skeleton master, then travel to the top of the highest mountain in all of Ferelden and atop that mountain you must defeat the high dragon and use his flame to light the brazier atop the mountain From there you will sacrifice a young boy, drink his blood from the chalice then meld your being with the stone of eclipse, you will then enter a dream state and the beacon will attract the ghost of death whom you must defeat to gather its essence so I can create a potion of ultimate fortitude to save my dying son." You: Well that seems tough, gonna be a nice reward for me when I get back! *Hours later* You: "OK, all done" Generic NPC: Why thank you bold adventurer, my son is saved thanks to you, here take this pittly amount of experience and a few gold for your trouble, also I found this Dweomer rune under the sofa cushion last friday, you don't have enough of those, do you? Probably not, it is yours also" You: RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEE

Generic NPC: Please accept what I can give for saving my son

You: No... I can't possibly do that. It was a honor to help a noble warrior such as you. My reward is knowing that your son is alive and the forces of evil defeated.

You: (Walk away)

Generic NPC: Suckaaa

Like Mass Effect, I have some of the best armor/weapons just playing through the game and I can't even get anymore money, because 9,999,999 is the cap.

Did you not get rewarded with Experience Points?

"You have not failed no one Grasshopper, only your own ambition."

Can not help you with DA, since I decided to wait for the GOTY version with all DLC included (and 90% of the major bugs patched), in a year or more.
