well i dont know about thsi one but i kinda have some kind of a understanding of wich would be better, for instance-

GOOD----------------------------------------------------------------|------------------------------------- Bad

rpg -

longer, make friends, personalize your char, nice world|sometime too time consuming, harder to get to be the best

fps -

cool guns, cool graphics, SNIPPING !!, cool concepts|very competitive, alot of jerks, low ammunition :P

of corse lag sucks for all of em and so do jerks but i find you find more jerks in fps games then in rpg and even though you do find friends in fps games but i find you find even more from rpgs.

I think you're right, I tend to see a lot more jerks in FPS's than in RPG's.

Its all a matter of personal preference. I tend to like both genres, but I don't like the snipping that happens in FPSes :)

It really depends on what you are into. It's easier and cheaper to make a good FPS than it is to make a good RPG though. So there tends to be a lot more FPS's than RPG's. Personally, I prefer RPG's since there is a lot more that goes into making them than an FPS, which I feel gives them a lot more depth, and makes them more lasting and meaningful.

Or you can mix the two and come up with something like Deus Ex. Honestly, I like both and I play both.

Mmmmmmm. RPG or FPS Diablo II or Half-Life 2 Ice Cream or Pizza Porsche or Mercedes Elisha Cuthbert or Scarlett Johansson It's all about opinion, either way there is good stuff in both sides.

I don't have too much of an input here, except, I'd take a run at Elisha Cuthbert.

For me it's RPG hands down. Playing a FPS is nice, but it's lasting appeal is very short. Shooting my way once or twice through a FPS is enough for me, after that it looses it's appeal. An RPG is more complex and takes a lot of time to complete. Plus modern RPGs are non-linear while a FPS isalways linear. And I like hoarding money and grabbing/selling items, something that is unique to RPGs. Also, I think RPGs require a little more of the grey matter than FPSs (even if it isn't that much more).

There are of course mixed bags, like STALKER. But that game didn't really deliver the RPG part. Still, I would love to see an Oblivion/Gothic3with guns. I hope Fallout 3 will deliver that unique experience, but I'm not holding my breath.

Well as has been said the community is usually better in RPGs although everyone wants the best gear and whatnot so somtimes that makes people not be very helpful.

In FPS, which is what I generally play, you get a decent community and everyone can be the best with practice. I prefer this because you don't have to worry you picked the wrong skill or put points into the wrong stat tree.

I loved Diablo don't get me wrong it's just I prefer shooters personally.

Oh ya, like selecting between coke or pepsi or spriteor mountain dew.

I would definately prefer FPS if I don't have put my brain to work.but if I want to be competitive than what can i say RPG with longer playing time.

for online games, i prefer fps because its fast and fun

but in normal times, i prefer rpg because they have good storylines.

I prefer FPS-style combat, but I also prefer the freeform gameplay of a typical WRPG. Good thing we have hybrids ala System Shock, Deus Ex, and The Elder Scrolls series...but none of them seem to have quite perfected the FPS/RPG blend, though. System Shock is awesome, but linear. Deus Ex is nice and has freeform gameplay with multiple solutions to a problem, but the AI was poor(enemies were too slow to react upon seeing you just pop up in their FOV). The TES games don't quite have the combat quite right, and the RPG element seems a tad shallow for some reason(for instance, in Oblivion, we don't see Daedra roaming around and raising hell beyond the Oblivion portals). So, what kind of FPS/RPG blend would I want, then? I have something in mind, but working out all the details would result in the longest post ever to grace GameSpot.

Well I believe that they are both good but I think that the game STALKER has a good mix of both RPG and FPS and it is freeworld.

The way you staged your question, you actually seem to be asking people if they like to play FPS or RPG online.

If that's the case, I'd very strongly lean towards FPS (take Counter Strike: Source for example) because I cannot stand all the "grinding" and the need to join a party/group or to become part of a guild/house in RPG MMOs. I hate having to rely on other people to let me advance in a game.

In CS:S you don't entirely have to rely on anyone else to be able to advance through a round. Sometimes you can pull of incredible feats of heroism on your own and take down the whole other team by yourself. Also, I just like to shoot stuff. Sometimes there's nothing more entertaining then shooting someone in the head with your pistol, or stabbing them in the back when they're not looking.

I think I like both genres equally. If I could only play RPGs or FPSs for the rest of my gaming days, I would not be able to decide.

I personally like both types and have been playing them from the earliest days of gaming. Well RPGs anyway, I picked up FPS games when Wolfenstine 3D came out.

people who play rpgs are trying to escape life j/k, while fps gamers are trying to proving there skill ,while rpgs prove how must timeis wasted to get a higher level

in other words most rpgs you get items ect by spending so much time doing stuff ,but in fps you need a degree in skill to play good online and knowing you beat someone with your own little tactics is far more rewarding then completing a quest or killing someone who is a lower level then you, rpg skill go's by time spent. while fps go by skill of reflexes and other mine over matter tactics

There is only one reason why a person should play a game; enjoyment

the bottom line is if a game isn't enjoyable then theres no point in playing it, this is the reason I'm frustrated with RPGs like WoW. Sure it was fun for the first 20 lvls when everything was new, but then sadly the game becomes heavily achievement based, its all about leveling and the only real means to do so is through grinding... repetative pointless button mashing grinding... killing the same beast over and over 1000 times to get 'xp'. The game became more a chore then anything else, having to devote so much time to grinding with no enjoyment or challenge.

This is why I prefer FPS

btw. there are just as many jerks in RPG then in FPS but the ones in RPG are more annoying, at least you can shoot fps jerks in the face

RPGs are becoming more and more like FPSs (or TPS), what with all these first person/third person action RPGs they keep churning out. Classic RPGs aren't being made anymore.

No there is not only one reason why a person should play a game. It is not always enjoyment.

There is something called Professional Gaming, people don't play games for fun, they compete for money.

I play most games for fun but I play CSS for competition at lans.

All the pros I know enjoy their game. If they didn't enjoy it, why would they start making money of it? (In reality, when you don't enjoy something you eventually become bad at that task, or worse than before)

I think RPG's are better than FPS's but some RPG's take along time to get into, and in FPS'sthey are fun almost right away.
