We need help finding a good RPG that has an engaging storyline, good graphics and is interesting for PS2 and/or the PC. We're bored of RPGs that have little or no story.

We've played these games and liked them very much:

Grandia II

Dragon Quest 8

Riven

Chrono Cross

Okage

Exile

Okami

Thanks for your help!

well im no pro RPG guy, but have you tried the diablo games or planescape: torment, which I never played, but heard is the best RPG storywise.

mass effect is fun, but I don't know if you want guns or magic, like oblivion.

Mass Effect didn't really seem too great in the beginning so I quit playing and finished COD4 (which by the way is so god damn amazing! I see now why everyone says it's too short:) and also got sucked into C&C3.

A couple days ago I picked up Mass Effect again and holy **** There were parts of the game where I felt completely immersed into the story. The graphics are amazing and once I got used to the control interface and the millions of weapons and armor upgrades I fell in love!

This is one of those RPC titles that is worth a PC upgrade.

For deep complex story lines and what many call 'true' RPGs, these ones are not winning any graphic awards any time soon though; they're dated: Planescape: Torment (often regarded as having the best story in gaming history. Beautiful game as well, not techincally, but artistically). Baldurs' Gate 2: Shadows of Amn (See above, just one of the (if not the) best RPGs ever made. Utilises D&D mechanics, although it can be palyed 'part real time'. Also has terrific art direction. Screw dynamic lighting and 16xAA, the art style here is just beautiful.) Neverwinter Nights (Deep RPG also utilising D&D mechanics, although the combat here can also be played 'part real time'. Engaging fantasy story in this one as well, although it's not too hard to see through it. You know, that one arsehat you meet you know is going to betray you 10 min later, despite him being on your side now..). One good thing here though, mods. There are so many mods, replayability is very high. And if you find a friend to play with, it's so much better. It's like a session of D&D, but in a game. How awesome is taht? Fallout1+2 (Very very good games. Fallout 1 is my favourite RPG, period. Turn based but fun combat. It wouldn't be fun if it wasn't for the very humorous groin shots etc. You've probably seen the Fallout 3 video, uses VAT system but completely turn based. And again, you can shoot groins. I love this one for the dark humour, near unlimited dialogue options and outcomes.. and great universe. Who doesn't like post apocalyptic worlds? Last thing, diplomacy. You can finish the last boss by simply talking to him. These gems are one of the few where you can actually do just as good talking as blasting. For newer ones, but still with good stories which keep you playing from Friday night till Sunday afternoon..) KOTOR (What no one saw coming a few years back, a very deep Star Wars RPG. If you like Star Wars, get this now. If not, get it anyway. The combat is D&D but it looks very fluid and is done in 'part real time'. You can of course pause it if you want to. Deep character customization, graphics still strong..ish today, good (although not as good as Fallout or BG) dialogue and well, who doesn't like to be a Jedi? The one problem it does have is that the good and evil is really.. Well you can be Mother Theresa, a mercenary or just a complete jackarse who beats up people for the fun of it. Don't expect to become the evil, intelligent and mysterious dark force user. You're either really good, really boring/greedy, or a highschool bully. KOTOR2 (Unfinished, but still worth a look. It is a great game, jsut not as great as the first one in the series). . Vampires: Bloodlines the Masquerade (You're a vampire, what more do you need? Goodish combat, experience rewarded when you finish quests, not for killing enemies, which really triggers the 'play the game as you like' phenomena. If you want to sneak, sneak, if you want to fight, please do. Full of dark humour and some silly things (like lesbians), but very enjoyable and definately work a look. Be sure to get the patches though, it's a buggy mess. Jade Empire (A very very good game, but not in any way shape or form the best game. Real time but simple arcade combat. Suffers from same problem as KOTOR in that if you want to go the evil path you'll just be a mindless thug. But still, engaging and enjoyable.) . Fable (Very underrated game, it died because of its' hype. While you can be good or evil it's very simple compared to other games. BUT it's a fun game, combat is enjoyable and it's a bit tongue in cheek. You won't get an attachement to the citizen, so killing one won't make you feel bad (ala KOTOR, BG etc), but it's enjoyable nonetheless. Just a cheerful little world at your disposal. . Morrowind (I personally haven't played Daggerfall, and I'm not gonna get started on the 'RPG' called Oblivion. But this game is very deep, as dated but still okay looking graphics and a very complex and engaging story line. Awful combat system, but it's a good RPG system. Your skill won't be involved here, but as your character grows you certainly become stronger. The fact that you can play the game in so many different ways is also good, stealth, combat, whatever. And this was (before Oblivion) one of the most modded games out there. Great community still, you can make the graphics look pretty sweet, improve the combat, add quests, characters, models, add dialogue.. whatever, it's awesome. And if you feel like it, the construction set is very newbie friendly. Why not make your own epic storyline? And uhm, probably missed some, and I'm getting lazy, hope I helped you out a bit though :D

Many of the previous posts had some great suggestions. I'd also like to add Knights of the Old Republic.

Edit: ooops, someone beat me to it.

Well, I don't know much about the games that you have played in the past and enjoyed, BUT I do know that Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is THE BEST RPG OF ALL TIME!

There's also Vampire: Bloodlines and Arcanum, two excellent RPGs by Troika.

I have to second some of the games mentioned:

Planescape Torment - Old DnD game but great nonetheless.
Baldurs Gate 1 & 2 - Same gameplay as planescape. 2nd is better than 1st but the 1st is good too
Fallout 1 & 2 - Same engine as the 2 above but futuristic.
Morrowind- Incredibly deep but needs a lot of reading. Get some mods and get ready for a ride.
KOTOR 1 - by Bioware, the 1st game has a great story, excellent gameplay, and good balance.
KOTOR 2- by Obsidian, is a cheap buggy unbalanced copy of #1 placed over another great story
Mass Effect- Excellent game all round.
Witcher - Also very good but somewhat linear. If you can see past that then its very good.
Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines - Like the 2 above, a great all round game.
FFVII & FFVIII- If you can look past the fanboyism and anti-fanboyism they are good games

What I dont recommend for story driven games RPG's:

Neverwinter Nights 1- By Bioware, same gameplay as Baldurs Gate but story is real boring
Neverwinter Nights 2- By Obsidian, has a worthless story, and is so buggy it still doesnt right function today
Diablo... how the hell is this even mentioned in the story driven rpg thread? Good game but its not story driven

As said by some people before me KOTOR AND KOTOR 2 are two of the very best rpg games and overall games I've ever played, try them you wont regret it.
