I've ben searching my self for the exact same thing you have a couple of months ago, and these are the games i recommend:

Empires: Dawn of the Modern World (fantastic real time strategy game from the designer that created Age of Empires and Empire Earth, 9 civilizations that play different from each other, the campaigns are great, the skirmish is great, fully 3D with beautiful visuals, and it's basically the legacy of Age of Empires to its fullest)

Age of Mythology (you've probably played it, but still i have to recommend one of the best RTS games in existence)

Civilization 5 (we know its a turn based strategy game, but this last itteration focuses more on combat, plus ofcourse the building of a mighty empire, so it is a worthy recommendation)

warhammer 40k: dawn of war I

Age of Mythology + Titans expansionfits the bill. It's actually rather fun as well, think Age of Empires with mythical creatures and heroes.

If you played Rise of Nations, then you should give Rise of Legends a shot as well.

Starcraft 2. The game has a large emphasis on base building and includes things like infantry, tanks, and aerial units.

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, Starcraft II and if you havent played Company of Heroes do yourself a favor and get it, its one of the best.

Also you may want to give TA:Spring a try its an RTS based on the Total Annihilation games, the game is mainly multiplayer, you can play skirmish aganist bots too, theres loads of units and buildings to construct, the levels are massive and best of all, its free.

Some other decent RTS games id reccomend are:

HomeWorld 2 and Star Wars: Empire at War.

These are great games that you should try: Supreme Commander 2, Company of Heores, Dawn of War 1 and 2 (2nd more tactical rpg than rts), Star Ruler, AI War, Sins of a Solar Empire, RUSE, Any of the Total War games (though only the battles are in real time), Any of the Paradox Grand Strategy games (though it will take a while for you to learn them), Men of War: Assault Squad, Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 and 3, C&C Generals, Knights of Honor

Any and all of the C&C franchise.

Company of Heroes (plus expansions)

Supreme Commander 1 + 2.

World in Conflict.

Earth 21XX (there are 3 games in total here 2140, 2150, 2160)

Starcraft (both)

All of the above equate to literally Thousands of hours of gameplay. This should be a good start!
