....GOOGLE!

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/09/17/google-valve

"WELL PLACED SOURCES tell us that Google is going to be buying Valve any second now. If you have to stop and think about why, you probably are not aware of Steam, Valve's amazing content distribution platform."

I think it's great news for valve and gaming in general, particularly PC gaming. Google arent idiots like some other companies (ahem..microsoft?). I can't see them doing anything but good for PC gaming, if they choose to anyway.

Thoughts?

Valve are fine as they are - they make great games and have an awesome games distribution system, with growing support from devs (though other publishers are not so keen). I can see why Vavle might need the support of a company like Google to fend off larger publishers like EA, but what ventures have Google had in the games industry so far? Not exactly a proven tack-record when it comes to that sector, though saying that the amount of links they have with other companies is probably what will make this acquisition a success if it does go through.

Personally I'd rather just have Valve stay as they are - that's the safest thing for gamers

Google sucks. And they also want monopoly. Which sucks.

I also think Yandex is a better search engine.

hmm funny rumor :p .. don't disagree that valve has the best distribution for games content .. suppose it could be modified for other media .. but why .. might be best to let games have their own seperate distribution channels.

I don't believe this at all, but if it was true, what does google want with Valve? I hope they aren't going to fill Steam and the games with non-game related advertisements.

And how is Microsoft a bad company? They made PC gaming what it is today.

Wow! That sounds great!

Frankly, as far as I am concerned, Google hasn't put a foot wrong.
In fact, I'm gonna go over to Google Finance right now to add NASDAQ:GOOG to my portfolio, then post a Google Video through my Blogger page and subscribe to Google News feeds with the keywords "Google Valve acquisition".

Fact of the matter is, if Google acquired Valve, they'd pay through the teeth to make sure the quality folk at Valve stay on board, are given more money to work with, with more resources at their disposal. They'd probably add staff, but the motherf***ers would choose wisely - they always have.

Plus, Google has that huge emphasis on Open Source that we all so love and cherish - they might release Source codes...
Get it? Source?
Wow, tough crowd...

Goddamn I love Google.

And goddamn I love Valve.

LONG LIVE GOOGLVE!

Google sucks. And they also want monopoly. Which sucks.

Baranga

Of course they do.
Capitalist society. Monopoly FTW.

Google's storage capacity is greater than yours. Therefore, they are better than you.

Hmm, how so? Because we game on their OS?

That's like saying the government made the car industry what it is today because they made the roads these cars operate on.

I could think of worse things that could happen. This would be interesting to follow if it ended up being true, but only time (or Gabe Newell) will tell us that.

If you haven't noticed, lately Google has been trying to compete with Microsoft with everything. They made an OS, a browser, adn they're trying to buy everything they can get their hands on.

Google wouldn't buy Valve to help gaming, they'd do it for profit and to compete with Microsoft.

Am I the only one that noticed this link was to the Inquirer? A tabloid?

I'll believe it when I see it from a reliable source.

Nope, The Inquirer tends to spread false news and rumors (IE Nvidia 9 card specs)

i want valve to remain as they are, personally, but if this does happen, it'll probably mean really good things for steam (as in even greater number of games will be available) and will give me even more incentive to buy steam games.

Well even knowing it's false, yeah I'd rather it was google than EA, seems like everything computers is going to one or the other ( Tremendous overstatement, but just imagine overtime if unchecked, the Googlers and EA Zombies, they could spawn actual wars!).

Companies are buying each other out, left and right. Struggling economy so I'm not surprised. Hell, Bank of America just bought out Merryl Lynch for $50 billion. It's a growing trend. Unite to survive..

True that.

Google is well managed and well run. It's possible they could make Steam better and bring an even larger library of games to it.

If anything, google does have a huge database of our tastes and searches (bad for privacy to an extent, good for giving us personal content). Perhaps that would lead to a bigger and more compelling library on Steam.

Hmm that one wasn't made by Google. It just use some Google applications. If Google made an OS it'd be all over the news.

They did. I was also reading something from Cnet called '101 dumbest moments in busness 07' and someone proved google ads were not safe, they put in a drive by download virus called the 'drive by virus' that went on hundreds web pages. A few people actually clicked the link!

We obviously don't know if this is true, but compared to almost any other company I can think of, google would probably be the best.
