Allods is very enjoyable I liked it as it seemed close to WoW, but it was different and cinematic at some points. The class and character creation are very cool as well.

Allods is far better than ROM in many ways. But not just yet. Because the game's still new.

Would you mind posting back with how it compares to RoM? I could never get into RoM, it just felt "meh" somehow... :)

That doesn't make much sense... do you mean that Allods has the potential to b better than ROM?

I have invested dozens, if not hundreds of hours (i dont keep track, but its over a hundred, I know that much) into Runes and haven't spent a dime. None of my characters have touched any item that has required real cash. I have no problems playing the game. But I also don't get into the game in the same way that the people who play WoW nonstop get into WoW... Guess i attribute it to my normal lifestyle that doesn't prioritize Video games as top priority.

Even this early on in Allods life I found the game very polished and enjoyable. Also it is less like WoW than RoM, which may or may not be a good thing.

I have left RoM, but never spent money while I played it either. Truth be told, I prefer a cash shop to a subscription fee, since I'm one of those periodical MMO gamers who can go for several months without touching an MMO if I just don't feel like it. A monthly fee that I have to constantly cancel and reinstate is too much of a hassle. Free with cash shop suits me much better. :)

That would be more true if I actually used the cash shops... but I don't. Cash shops means that if you don't use them you get a free game. If you don't like them, play another game, simple as that. I really don't get the bitter hatred against them... no one is forcing anyone to use cash shops or play games that use them. They're completely voluntary, and if they bother you, then play a game that has another revenue model, like subscription fees. No need to resort to personal attacks here. :)

He probably would if I was dumb enough to PvP against him. :P I don't do PvP in cash shop games. It would be stupid of me to try and compete against someone with someone with such an obvious advantage. If I want to compete in PvP I do it in games without cash shops.

Cash shop in RoM doesn't have any weapons or armor. Most of the stuff are potions/furniture that increase XP and TP , mounts and armor skins. You can also buy some items that are used to upgrade gear, but it's not that hard to get it from just doing daily quests or AH. For the most part, cash shop doesn't affect actual gameplay...atleast it was the case back when I was still playing RoM.

Actually I am totally fine with that because I will get more enjoyment out of the game for a longer time than them. The most fun I have in a lot of games is leveling characters (this is the case for MMOs and even games like Diablo). It is just fun to progress, but spending money to essentially skip that would kill the entire experience of an MMO to me. That and I rarely play pvp and when I have I never experience anyone being way more overwhelmingly powerful than I am. And I have pvped in Archlord, and Requiem Bloodymare (both games have cash shops). So i call that games like that smart, because they have (what i consider) idiots that think they HAVE to pay to play. Now I do somewhat understand the reasoning of thinking you have to pay if you want to compete in PVP, but for the most part it still seems stupid. What do you gain from being the best pvper in a free MMO? Prestige? Or just the fact that you spent money when it wasn't required or necessary. But then again you never have to spend a dime and enjoy the game, which is why I like free mmos, because the fun of MMOs comes from the experience of playing MMOs, not being the best or having the best stuff. Getting to the point of getting the best stuff is a good feeling, but not the actual part of getting it. And when that experience can be completely free.

Well said. :) An MMO is about the journey, not about the destination. Or at least it should be... if nothing else because the good ones have no destination. Level caps move all the time.

Allods is much better than RoM imo. It feels fresher for some reason. I guess it's because RoM is almost an exact replica of WoW.

But that's still not fully equal. I've played those games too, but I'm still at a disadvantage against the ones who have more free time than I do. I have a full time job, a marriage, and we own a house. I can't spend as much time grinding levels as others do, and as a result, I progress slower. I'm behind in that system as well. Let's be honest, there will never be an MMO system that is completely and utterly equal to everyone who plays it. And since that's the case, I would rather there are several, so everyone can chose the ones they prefer and not be forced to play in one they detest, than the other way around. And I still don't see the point of detesting, by the way. Again, no one is forcing anyone to play in any kind of system. It's offered, not required.

The hatred against cash shops is the incorrect assumption that it is ALL about buying the best weapons and equipment, when atleast in games like RoM the only thing money gets you are mounts, inventory space, and some other things that as far as I know don't even affect your characters performance in battle (outside of experience potions)

This is exactly the reason why I don't play MMOs anymore. I got tired of all the time I had to put in. God, and the people who did...well...I'm just not going into all that.

I realize this is kind of an old thread, but I recently put these two games on each end of the scales and would like to share my two cents :) This is entirely based on my personality and what I look for in a game. Note: I spent years playing WoW so I have knowledge of how p2p games work. Before we begin: (I don't believe in calling either of these or any game a WoW clone as the majority does. WoW is not the origin of fantasy mmo's anymore than Terry Goodkind is the origin of fantasy novels. Just because it looks like WoW with the interface, doesn't not make it a clone. My $200 Yamaha acoustic guitar looks like every other acoustic guitar. It has 6, strings, 22 frets, and a sound hole. Does that make it a clone? No. It's how a guitar works. That said, WoW wasn't the first mmo with a toolbar based, hotkey or point n click interface...) ALLODS: Very polished from the beginning. The classes play great although I founds the casters to be sluggish. Love the crusader archetype becuase you're always clicking buttons. I like to keep busy. The story is OK. Once you get out of the noob area in the beginning, the game hits you with too much stuff all at once, imo. I stood in Novogard or whatever that first city is called and felt kind of overwhelmed. Some like that kind of thing, but I was fatigued from reading so much so soon. Then comes the catch. When you die, your gear may become cursed. In order to lift the curse you need holy charms which are only available in the cash shop or from other players on the AH at a high in game currency markup. There is a daily quest where you can get 5 of these charms a day to equip in case you die, but It gets old. I just get the overwhelming feeling the allods is a money making scheme in the disguise of an mmo. Yes, everyone needs to eat and we all need to make money, but it just seems like it's not a real game. Can't quite put my finger on it. Sorry for my lack of better words there. RUNES OF MAGIC: Graphically a little wonky, but still good. You can do a dual class type thing similar to Guildwars. I choose RoM over allods because the item shop is more for aesthetic enjoyment rather than items you NEED to go on. You only have 2 races, but with the wide variety of class combinations you'll never get old expressing yourself. Runes of Magic also has a more fun leveling system over allods. You feel yourself getting stronger on a nicer curve. Well I hope that helps. I too, feel MMOS are about the journey and that they all die at endgame (except guildwars) I just don't care about pvp or being the "best" when all you're doing is slaving hours chasing a never ending carrot on a stick. If i were to play any other game besides guildwars it would be Runes of Magic.
