... you memory could have gone bad... Viruses... spyware.... lots of things.

I think if you run a DxDiag and paste it here.... (I think it maybe to big...) I think we could get a better view on the problem.

This happened to me; turns out my power supply was on its way out. However, it may also be a memory issue. My suggestion is to make a bootable CD with Memtest (like the Ubuntu live CD), boot from the CD, and run Memtest.

You can also remove each stick of RAM to see if the problem persists.

Best of luck.

Possible reasons:

1) insufficient power supply

2) bad memory

3) overheating

to test if the power supply is not up to the job its best to remvoe all unnessasry components... dvd drives , fans , overclocks, everything to take it down to the bare minimum... that would determin if the power supply is insufficent or just bad.... as evyerone else has stated it could also be a ram problem as as soon as you load a program the cpu loads it into the ram.... so it would seem logical that thats just not happening and its crashing.

Well, I've run numerous adware/spyware/antivirus tools. There seems to be nothing, so I'll rule that out. I tried removing the RAM as well, one stick at a time, even placing in an old 512MB stick. Nothing, still restarted. I would have to guess my PSU is going out. It would figure. I bought one of them there 550 Rosewills. Can anyone suggest a decent sub $150 PSU? I'm going to be buying more ram and a new 2900XT soon, so I might as well get a new PSU.

Currently running:

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+, MMX, 3DNow (2 CPUs), ~2.4GHz

2046MB RAM

VisionTek Radeon X1300

Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519)

With 750GB total HDD space.

Should I go for 1GB more ram instead of 2 and buy a new power supply? Or should I just skip the ram and go for the PSU?

Try removing all non-essential componants before buying a new PSU. If you actually deduce that the PSU is the problem, I'd go for a Corsair 550VX.

I ran Memtest86+, and everything turned out fine. I then unplugged the necessary components, only problem: the only things I had to remove were my DVD drive and secondary hdd. Is this enough to tell if it's a bad PSU? It still restarted and whatnot. Do you recommend I get a new one? Are the ones in the link I provided good enough? A decent brand? My dad suggested at least 750W just in case I want to go Crossfire with my 2900XT in the near future.

Do each of the steps described here:

Diagnose

Doing all of the above I found out that my mobo and memory modules were screwed.

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that it is my PSU.
