Hey guys, I have just purchased a external hard drive...its is my western digital, features a 7200 rpm drive with a 8 mb buffer...i was wondering, how easy is it to run xp off of one of these? Can I jst plug it in usb, then set my bios to boot off of usb? Or is it a much more complicated process? Thanks...

Its that easy. As long as your BIOS supports USB booting, most systems do nowadays

So no internal HDD is needed at all if you boot via USB?

If your booting off of something large like a external Hard drive, no. but if you have an external drive that needs to unzip files onto something, then i think you do.

Yeah, there's no reason you can't run your OS off of an external drive if your BIOS permits you to boot from that drive. The only issue to consider if you do this via USB 2.0 is performance. While USB 2.0 is pretty fast for an external interface (400mbits) it's slow compared to IDE (1064 mbit) or SATA (2400 mbits). f your enclosure supports it, I would recommend running external SATA if you can.

I just got an external HDD from WD as well, and it works great for installing stuff to, as it's 7200 RPM as compared to 5400 RPM in my internal HDD.
