Dubbed Radeon HD 5870

We
received some details about the name of the chip that ATI codenamed Cypress which we have called RV870. The internal generation codename is Evergreen and this name represents the entire DirectX 11 generation of ATI cards.

The top card is named Radeon HD 5870 but the company plans two versions, one with 2GB memory and one with 1GB.

The Radeon HD 5870 1GB should sell for $399 at launch, while Radeon HD 5870 2GB should sell for $449. At the same time, the slower Radeon HD 5850 with 1GB memory will sell for $299. The launch date for all three cards is September 23rd in Europe whereas in the US we are talking about the 22nd.

They'll get cheaper when the GTX300s are released, at the moment all the cards are competing with the top Nvidia cards even though they're of a lower ranking

Well those prices make me glad I did just go with a HD4890 even if it is "old technology" :)

Na the 8800GT still has life in it. I wouldnt get a dx 11 card until its really been tested and proves its self in dx10&11.

HD5770 comes in October

ATI is preparing an addition to its RV870 generation codenamed Cypress and this time we are talking about the card codenamed Juniper that is supposed to sit in between RV740 and RV770 cards.

It is supposed to launch in October time and it should be priced at under $200. Performance should be a bit lower than HD4890, probably a bit lower than the HD4870, but overall it should be a quite powerful card.

The card looks too expensive to us, as you can buy an HD 4870 for just $135 and HD 4890 for about $200 and ATI will have to work hard to convince people that DirectX 11 is so important that you have to upgrade today and not in 2010.

i heard in another that 5850 199 and 5870 299. so i hope ur post is wrong.

4850,3850,3870,4870 did not realease with those prices ever.

Those prices are not high if u compare the performance. The leak said that 5870 will have average fps of 43 in 1920resolution with 4x AA and 16x AF in crysis. If these numbers are true that 5870 beats gtx295 which average at 36fps with the same configuration. Even if 5870 doesnt average at 43fps say it is averaging at same level of gtx295 still the price is ok. Look at gtx295 $500 card u r paying for dual card, more heat, less overclocking, not dx11 and so much more. So if u see in reality if 5870 beats 295 or even same or close to 295 still u r paying $100 less for that card with new technology. Dont u think it is rational? Do u want to pay $300 for a card that beats or same or come very close to the top-est card in current generation with newer generation technology? Yes we want to pay as little as we can but if u think rationaly i dont think that the price is that much higher. U have to pay the price premium to grab the latest technology At least they are not charging u $500+ or even $700+ for that card. I bet if nvidia would come out with same card same performance they would charge $600 or more. Think about 8800ultra when it came out it was $700+ with just a little overclock of 8800gtx which was $500+. So what do u expect more? For me the price is very tight. And Ati again maybe going to prove that they are very good when it comes to price/performance ratio.

People will be wanting to upgrade to dx11 when Alien vs. Predator comes out early 2010. Also lookout for dx11 games Dirt 2 and Battleforge which are set to release this year. Until then, the 5870 will breeze through all current games, maybe 2 will be needed for super smooth hi res Crysis.

Those cards never had an edge on the competition like the 5xxx series does. Do you remember back in the day when an ati x800 was $400-$500? ATI is in the business of making money and will play the market just like everybody else.

Doesn't seem worth it at that price IMO, was waiting for the cards, thought they would be a tad more affordable, guess not...Gonna wait for second gen DX11 cards, or a price drop before I even consider buying one.Im_single

Lmao not worth it? What are you smoking? The 5870 if the early benchmarks are correct is faster than the freaking GTX295 MARS You know the special edition 1000 dollars 295 thats basically Two 2 GB 285's smashed together. It's faster then that, but it's not worth it? Ok

It looks to be the single biggest jump between any generation of videocards, but it's not worth it.

The 300 Dollar 5850 alone will likely be faster than the 500 dollar GTX295, but it's not worth it!

And this is just the MSRP prices, I bet you'll be able to buy a 5850 for 230 bucks by Black Friday.

No, it wasn't even close a 4870 is equal to a 3870x2, well they basically trade off, the 4870 edges it out in some the 3870x2 edges it out in others

The benchmarks we have indicate the 5870 will likely be faster than three not 4870's, but three 4890's in crossfire.

The 3870 to 4870 was just a double up over the previous gen, this is more like a quad jump.

That's most likely what I'll be doing, especially if their are games coming out at that point that can really take advantage of the tech
