yeah, it can be very frustrating to get past the openng stages - even, as you say, on novice - but that's because it's not a run n gun shooter
act like you're a real person, taking a single bullet would seriously wound you, even if it was to the arm or leg - taking a bullet to the gut would be agonising, anywhere else would be more or less fatal
play the game with that mentality - hide - watch them, stalk them, go for sneaky headshots, use crouch and lean to their fullest
i think it's the single greatest feature of the game, that element of survival, i've not played a game like it since rogue spear, even on hard difficulties, it's hard to get a grasp of your own mortality in fps games, you're always the one man soldier, the hero who never gets hit, and even when he does - it's in the shoulder - whatever
stalker does change later on, though - once you get a rifle with scope and a stalker suit or duty armour, it pretty much becomes your standard run n gun - too bad
it is a good game, though, you're clearly just trying to play it like every other fps you ever played - and stalker is not like any other fps you ever played

Yeah I took your advice, while ignoring the little idiot flamers on this thread. I got myself past the first few stages. It is still very challenging but now I'm not dying constantly.
I still have issues with this game. It's buggy the sidequests are on timers, which I HATE! The enemies are near impossible to see if they're at a good distance and they won't approach you so you can get a better shot at them, but oh BOY they can sure hit YOU from a really good distance which to me is unfair.
The stealth aspect of the game is shoddy at best. I tried stealthing very slowly and carefully into a camp of bandits, they saw me from far away regardless even though it was dark and i was at full crouch. The enemy A.I is kinda crappy, they seem like they can't miss you now matter how well you take cover. I hate that kind of crap A.I. They shoot at you the INSTANT you peek from behind a tree like crappy A.I will do. Realistic A.I wouldn't be able to see you no matter where you are.
But the game really is atmospheric. Although the quest rewards are stupid as you can get the same items off dead bodies. Pretty good game, a bit too hard. It can't decide if it wants to be an RPG or a shooter, but its not quite either successfully. Though the whole package is pretty fun.
