Stalker shadow of Chernobyl.

Okay so I started to play it, thought wow this is cool, a FPS/RPG.

So I killed the two boars for the first mission. I thought, okay not so bad, easy.

Then I tried ANY of the next series of missions, even on novice the game is nearly impossible. Unless I'm doing something wrong and I'm not supposed to be attempting those missions yet, this game is really frigging frustrating.

 WTF any tips?

Walk around, take your time, enjoy the sights.

This isn't an FPS where you can just run into a crowd of enemies and expect to win, hell, a single shotgun round to your body from an enemy can essentially one-shot you from full health.

It's all about taking your time, luring out opponents into areas they can't gang up on you at once, and collecting the remains off their corpses later on to then keep yourself alive with for any long journeys.  Headshots really do make all the difference btw.  Enemies don't like going down in one shot earlier on until you start packing the larger weaponry later on.

For me, STALKER is probably one of the best surprises for me this year, challenging, atmospheric, and best of all, it's got some legitimate scary moments in it that don't rely on "Boo! Scared ya? tactics.

yeah, it can be very frustrating to get past the openng stages - even, as you say, on novice - but that's because it's not a run n gun shooter

act like you're a real person, taking a single bullet would seriously wound you, even if it was to the arm or leg - taking a bullet to the gut would be agonising, anywhere else would be more or less fatal

play the game with that mentality - hide - watch them, stalk them, go for sneaky headshots, use crouch and lean to their fullest

i think it's the single greatest feature of the game, that element of survival, i've not played a game like it since rogue spear, even on hard difficulties, it's hard to get a grasp of your own mortality in fps games, you're always the one man soldier, the hero who never gets hit, and even when he does - it's in the shoulder - whatever

stalker does change later on, though - once you get a rifle with scope and a stalker suit or duty armour, it pretty much becomes your standard run n gun - too bad

it is a good game, though, you're clearly just trying to play it like every other fps you ever played - and stalker is not like any other fps you ever played

Ark123

doom 3 is a run n gun shooter, though, the game is designed in a way that you will take damage - stalker is not, and if you play it like a run n gun game, it's like playing a game of football but deciding you just want to run in circles because that's how you want to play the game, and that you should be able to win your game of football on easy by doing that - but that's playing the game wrong - stalker is the same - there are rules you must follow... you're right in that it's a little poorly balanced - but if you play it the way it's meant to be played, it's very do-able even for a novice

unless your idea of easy difficulty is god mode...

the game known as think before shoot - don't think it's F.E.A.R. or CS: S where you can jump out infront of enemies and and shoot like you're in rampage/killing spreeand sh!t, think before you shoot - but don't say that it's crap because you don't know how to play

You should be able to run all the way to the bar and through Cordon and Garbage without ever looking back on veteran difficulty. I have done this just picking up what I find along the way in about 25 minutes. Use fire and manuever tactics. Use cover, peek out and control your fire. Aim for the upper chest and head. It is not essential to get a kill every shot. Dont get flanked or be afraid to fall back.

It gets hellova lot easier, and better, once you get some decent guns and artefacts, so I recommend you just stick with it. And for some reason I felt like using silenced weapons was somehow f***ed up, could be a bug or something, but once I changed to normal weapons I started doing a lot beter. Also change keybinds so that you have quick heal close by and that the crouch button sticks when you press it once. Using Ironsights isn't all that necessary, the crosshair aim is pretty good on med range too, and shoot at the head.

Tip: F6.

The first mission is the hardest in the game, because all you've got is that crap pistol. Your best bet is to stand behind the truck and offer support for that mission.

Also try turning the visual settings down. I found that the game was too hard because I wasn't getting smooth frames per second.

this type of game, you can choose how long it takes to beat b/c there are lots of side quests. If you want the good ending your going to have to play for a while, but you can rush through the game on novice pretty quick.....but the game wasn't meant for a quick win. It will take alot longer than your regular HL2, Doom 3, FEAR, etc. sort of games.

You have no entitlement to an opinion until you actually play the godamn game, Ark. And Doom 3 would still suck with or without one shot kills. The only parts that where any good where the parts they ripped off from System Shock 2.

I bought stalker a couple of days ago, and I'm loving it. The tactical co-operative combat, realistic ballistics, and minor rpg elements remind me very much of Jagged Alliance, only from a first person perspective and set in Chernobyl.

Well, the TS is right, STALKER is pretty crap.

Played the game on Highest difficulty setting (Master?).

It was fun for about 5 missions, then it got boring, it's always go kill run back, not very interesting, and it's not like mutants haven't been done before.

The game is just too little, too late, if they would have brought it out when they first intended too (like what 5-7 years ago?) then it would have been a better game simply because not to many games back then had this gameplay.

So you are actually implying that nowadays, a lot of FPS games feature the kind of gameplay that STALKER offers ? You are quite obviously pulling this out of your arse.

Please name 1 such game.

Lose the handgun and shotguns at the start, grab the knife go into low crouch and you'll find the start alot easier. If it's the mission with Wolf scouts, do in the left handside by yourself and kife everyone. I found it hard at the start to do this bit but one i mastered the knife I got through the first bit easily.

This game is not like any other shooter where you can just dive in with a gun and expect the enemies to drop dead with one or two shots. The accuracey system is more realistic and the enemies have decent ai. You should take it slow and pick your enemies off like a real stalker.

This is one of the best FPS's i've played in a while. It's like Oblivion meets FEAR, Give it a chance, just because YOUR'RE bad at the start doesn't mean the game is bad, just that YOU are.

Stating that "STALKER=crap" just because it's difficult is pure trolling ,not to say idiotic .I can understand why ppl don't like the game , but to judje it by playing 2 hours and saying it is difficult and therefore crap , eeh no , it's wrong .

I absolutely adore the game despite the flawed storytelling . If it had efficient and dramatic storytelling , I would easily put it alongside with the Fallout series in my top 3 games of all time.

you're doing something wrong. you're probably playing it like some generic fps. this game has a lot to do with tactics and equipment. in the beginning you have terrible equipment. you have to be very close to get a good shot because your weapon doesn't have good accuracy. it doesn't just go to where you point. because of this you have to use tactics. this includes, using cover, getting close, luring them to come to you if possible and crouching and kneeling to get better aim. it's not a run and gun game.

Once I got into the 2nd zone the game got way better, once I got my first SMG they game just sucked me right in... for all its flaws, and it has manny, this game is great. I just hope the devs stick with it and keep patching the product until most of the bugs are ironed out. It is trying to be something different and for that it I give it alot of respect.

you can't load them(the old saves) anymore if you patch.

you'd have to start over and make new saves.

You are making a good point regarding the difficulty, in that it should appeal to the broadest audience possible. However, I dont agree with saying that the game has a flaw. Xcom 1 and 2 were TREMENDOUSLY difficult on novice, yet I never heard someone saying that the game was flawed. Same with Operation Flashpoint or Rainbow Six, were only a 2-3 shots will get you killed. Nobody says that those games are flawed just because you cant run in with guns blazin'... Ive played the first few quests of STALKER and found a really addictive game. It has that System Shock 2 feeling with the inventory, RPG stats and weapon condition... So it is possible that this game is not for everyone...

A-S_FM

Yeah I took your advice, while ignoring the little idiot flamers on this thread. I got myself past the first few stages. It is still very challenging but now I'm not dying constantly.

I still have issues with this game. It's buggy the sidequests are on timers, which I HATE! The enemies are near impossible to see if they're at a good distance and they won't approach you so you can get a better shot at them, but oh BOY they can sure hit YOU from a really good distance which to me is unfair.

The stealth aspect of the game is shoddy at best. I tried stealthing very slowly and carefully into a camp of bandits, they saw me from far away regardless even though it was dark and i was at full crouch. The enemy A.I is kinda crappy, they seem like they can't miss you now matter how well you take cover. I hate that kind of crap A.I. They shoot at you the INSTANT you peek from behind a tree like crappy A.I will do. Realistic A.I wouldn't be able to see you no matter where you are.

But the game really is atmospheric. Although the quest rewards are stupid as you can get the same items off dead bodies. Pretty good game, a bit too hard. It can't decide if it wants to be an RPG or a shooter, but its not quite either successfully. Though the whole package is pretty fun.

Every game should be easy enough on the easy setting for noobs to play, and challenging enough on the hard setting for the "pro"s. If the game plays on novice like most other games play on hard, the game really sucks, because not only hardcore gamers are supposed to play it. I didnt see in the system requirements "kickass gamer required". Imagine playing say... Doom3, where you get killed with one shot on the easiest setting. Is it fun? I think not.

Games back in the day used to be more difficult that this anyway. Really old games for PC like prince of persia, was hella difficult, even old console game for the nintendo, like ninja gaiden, contra, they were difficult. Older gamers would enjoy such a difficult game.

Sounds like something an old granpa would say "Back in MY day, we didn't have no saves and conintues in our games. I would play for hours the same level just to figure it out with only 1 hit per death and no continues!"

I beat the game on Veteran difficulty..so I guess your just bad at FPS games :/DarKre

You are a complete liar and I have no way to prove you wrong, but you know you're lying. You either cheated or actually DIDNT beat it on veteran, so get over yourself and keep your adolescent trap shut unless you have something useful to say.

When I find Stalker getting a little too easy for me I just turn up the difficulty a notch. If it gets too difficult I will turn it down.

I am absoltuely having a blast with this game, great tip for this game is think three steps ahead, and watch your back.

I have no idea why people say this game is hard, it's not I'm nearly at "the zone" and I've had no problems getting there. This game is awsome. Only when you get the bigger guns does it get easier. Enjoy!!! :D

The game is "hard" because enemy ai coding is substandard and mediocre. There is no stealth, no strategy, enemies respawn randomly and without any logic, rhyme, or reason.

Get better weapons, get a scope, and start sniping tangoes from a distance. It becomes less frustrating that way.
