whenever i finish playing a game for a while my computer is quite warm, and the fan is usually running loudly (im sure most of you will be like duh to that haha). but im wondering if its ok to put the computer in sleep mode right after im done. or should i wait until i hear the fan stop running? bc once i put it in sleep mode the fan stops, and im not sure if that leaves everything hot without a fan to cool it.

Well it will cool more slowly but since the components will be powered down they shouldn't create any more heat. I've never encountered a problem with this.

This is right, if you cut the power there is no more energy being dissipated as heat. The components will continue to cool without a fan.

You'll be fine, if you prefer sleep, use sleep.

Shutting a PC down used to be harder on the compnents than leaving it running. Putting it to sleep isn't a problem.

Ok, I had heard that shutting a computer down was hard on the components. What about these days? Is it better to use sleep or shut down? Not that it maters, I'm obsessed and im gonna change the components out in 6 months anyway... : )

I leave my computer on during the day and shut down at night (mostly to keep Windows and other software running properly). I believe the issue before was a sudden jolt of voltage that came from powering the PC on and I think modern day power suplies and motherboards are more gentle because they use soft power on techniques (hard power on feeds full voltage immediately, soft power on gradually ramps up voltage and is more gentle). Still, components are delicate enough that static electricity can blow them out (which is why they are shipped in static proof bags and why you're supposed to be grounded to your PC when installing parts) and it's possible expansion and contraction from heating and cooling from powring on and shutting off can damage parts eventually. Sleep mode allows moving parts with a finite life to shut down while keeping some power to the electronics, but I don't think it makes too much of a difference anymore. It's not like you're going to keep the PC for 20 years.

Does windows 7 even support sleep or hibernate? Vista eliminated hibernate and enabling it from promt is only temp and doesn't seem to do anything. Putting Vista to sleep doesn't seem to anything other than turn the monitor off.

I'd figure much like any other electronics the thermostat decides weather or not the component is cool enough. So cutting the fans may not be good for the component. But I guess that depends on it's tolerance.

Sounds good to me.

The sleep modes on Win7 and Vista are very inconsistent, and I have never had anything good come about from sleeping my computer. Hell, using sleep mode on Win7 made Windows eat my BOOTMGR file and I could no longer boot my computer. I fixed the problem after many tries with the install CD, but the problem kept coming back after sleeping my rig. Needless to say, I was very pissed off.

I've had motherboards that leave fans on for a while after entering sleep mode. I'm not sure why all motherboards don't so this. Win 7 does support sleep mode, but if you have compnents that are not 100% Win 7 compatible then sleep mode might not work. Check for bios updates from your motherboard manufacturer and from you component manufacturers (including optical drives).
