Saint's Row 3 connected to Saint's Row 2, story wise?

I am wondering for those who have played both (or all 3) are they connected pretty good, or just a few referrences here or there?

Something I might need to play the originals for, or just look the story up on the internet?

Or are they not connected enough to bother with either?

Loosely. If you considering buying SR2 because of it being on sale this week. Just remember SR2 is considered one of the worst PC ports. If you think GTA IV is bad...

That's true, the story of SR2 was quite fun. I did enjoy the story of SR2 (actually I enjoyed all of SR2 quite a bit, though I played the console version not the PC version).

Though I still don't think that playing SR1 or 2 is needed or especially important to enjoy SR3.

I say go for the third. It's better optimized and twice as fun.
