PC Specifications for Saints Row: The Third

Oct 07, 2011

The time has come for all of our fans waiting for Saints Row:The Third on PC to know if their PC will be up to snuff in order to play our game come November. As many of you know, we've already announced that there will NOT be a delay for the PC version, and it will launch directly alongside its console brethren on Steam, with full Steamworks support.

I should also reiterate that the PC version of Saints Row:The Third was made in-house here at Volition, and was in a parallel development cycle alongside the 360 and PS3 versions. It is not a port, and will have exclusive features not found in the other versions.

Enough idle chatter, I know all of you want to see the minimum and recommended specs for Saints Row:The Third. Please note the extra bit of notation at the bottom specifically surrounding Co-Op, since that's a pretty important notation when it comes to Video RAM.

Minimum Specifications:

OS: Windows® XP
Processor: 2GHz Dual Core Processor (Intel® Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon™ X2) or higher
Memory: 2GB System RAM or more
Graphics: 320MB Video RAM GPU w/ Shader Model 3.0 support.
- NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 series or better.
- ATI Radeon™ HD3800 series or better
DirectX®: 9.0c
Hard Drive: 10GB
Sound: 100% DirectX® 9.0C compliant sound card or equivalent onboard sound

Recommended Specifications:

OS: Microsoft® Windows® 7
Processor: Any Quad Core Processor (Intel® Core i5 or AMD Phenom™ II X4) or 3.0+ Dual Core CPU
Memory: 4GB System RAM or more
Graphics: 1GB Video RAM GPU w/ Shader Model 4.0 support.
- NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 400 series or better.
- ATI Radeon™ HD5000 series or better
DirectX®: DirectX® 11
Hard Drive: 10 GB
Sound: 100% DirectX® 9.0C compliant sound card or equivalent onboard sound

Co-Op Play:

NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 cards or higher. Requirement of 640MB of Video RAM.
ATI Radeon™ HD3800 cards or higher. Requirement of 1GB of Video RAM.

I'm okay with this. As long as it doesn't stream from the HDD like SR2 - the worst port I've ever played - I'm happy. Looking forward to it.

What are the "exclusive" features? 'Cause that will likely determine whether or not I get this for the PC or 360. And whether or not it's well optimized (I have heard bad things about SR2 on the PC)

they did it on house this time(not done by cd projekt)... and it's parallel developed not a port... so it's got my hopes up as sr2 was horrid on the pc as a port ... no confirmed PC gameplay yet:cry:

Sounds reasonable. More reasonable than GTA4 was at least...

I'm banking on this game being good on PC. Don't need another RAGE or Dead Island piece of crap.

Q:AusGamers: Now you guys have a really solid fanbase. There's the GTA camp and then there's the Saints Row camp and then there's everybody in between. Obviously this one is being ramped up to a point that hopefully some of those guys will jump across for you and some of the inbetweeners will say "we're going to stay on this side of the fence as well". I assume that's definitely an internal goal for you guys to just expand the audience more.

What I want to know is... one of the things that is actually quite good about GTA, but isn't actually sanctioned by Rockstar is the mod community that actually ends up taking their games and doing really, really cool stuff with that.

Have you guys ever thought about doing that? Because with so much over-the-top, with all the tools and systems you've got in place, it just seems like a no-brainer.

A:Scott: Yeah, I know there has been some modding of Saints Row 2. I've seen videos of people unlocking all the vehicles; driving a subway train -- the L-Train -- around the city. So that sort of stuff does happen. I think what we've built on three, within the game... I'm not sure how much of this has already been talked about, but we have some methods of sharing your characters. So stuff you've created, you can upload and then other people can download it.

We can so similar stuff with screenshots this time, and then on the PC you'll be able to do videos -- you'll be able to do that sort of create your own environment, create your own videos and that sort of machinima stuff.

I would love to be able to support the community more and build that sort of basis. I think before you do that, you've gotta have a large number of people to buy the game. So right out of the gate, yes, that is our number one goal is to expand our user-base as much as possible; get as many people as possible playing the game, telling their friends about the game and telling them how awesome it is.

And that's why we build all of these missions where we want people to have these sort of water-cooler moments of "Holy **** did you see that mission in Saints Row: The Third? That was awesome!" and that brings other people in to play the game.

Red Faction 4: Armageddon runs on the Geomod 2.5 engine, and while it was considered for Saints Row: The Third, Volition, Inc. decided it would be too difficult to design the game around, and possibly counter productive. Anyway, SR3 would ideally take up less system resources than Red Faction 4: Armageddon since RF4 uses a more mature engine that handles much larger calculations it's just that it happens to have atomic optimization(i.e the best that can be achieved by human programmers). I wouldn't worry, looking at RF4, I wouldn't be surprised if Volition, Inc. could get a game like The Witcher 2 running on gameboy color :P

RF4 ran beautifully. Tears ran down my cheek.
