You can't really go wrong with either brand. Myself, i went with a Samsung 40" as it was on sale at the time and some of the specs were a bit better than the Sony. The Game Mode isn't that great, I found the games look better with it off. Keep checking the sales and when one or the other is marked down go for it.

Game mode just switches contrast and brightness settings automatically.

For input lag, Samsung is clearly the loser when head-to-head against Sony. For reliability, again Sony wins. For making their "vivid" setting incredibly and annoyingly bright in the store to attract customers, Samsung wins.

If you're going to buy a Samsung, get a 750 series panel. Stay away from the current generation of Samsung LEDs. Personally, I like the Sony XBR series of monitors.

Look at the Sony Bravia XBR Series KDL-40XBR9. Bravia Engine 3, 240 hz, CCFL backlight. Then, I'd take a look at the Samsung LN40B750. Both are 40 inches. Find a store with these TVs in a dark room. Then, have them turn the Samsung off vivid, because you'll never watch it on that setting for extended periods of time as it will ruin the monitor. Lastly, take a look at the LG 42LH90; a backlit LED television. The LG will produce deeper blacks than any of the Samsung LEDs and provides truer color, as well.

You can save some money and get a better picture with a 42" or 50" plasma (Panasonic would probably be your best bet, but Samsung also makes a descent set). However, if you use the TV in a very bright room, then you may be better off with an LCD. Also, if you are going to use the TV a lot for regular TV watching with multiple people, be sure to check out the off-angle quality of the TV's you are looking at. Some LCD's fare better than others, but no LCD is as good as plasma at of-angle viewing. Also, you can pretty much ignore the game mode a that's usually just a color and brightness preset that you should avoid anyways.

No problem. Also keep in mind the distance you sit from the TV. There's a chart that has been posted multiple times in these forums, but basically if you are going to sit closer than 5' with a 42" set or 6' with a 50" set, get 1080p. If you are going to sit farther than that, than the difference between 720p/1080p can not be seen by the human eye. For LCD's this isn't even an issue as just about all LCD's are now 1080p. With plasma's this can save you some additional money.

I've had a 40" Bravia for about 3 months and Its great. My last tv was a 32" Bravia, It broke after 8 months, but sony is good about replacing your broken tv within the 1-year manufacturers warranty- it still works.

Get the Samsung. My Bravia today, has a blue line (dead/blue pixels?) running down the left side.... Only had the TV for about 6 months too. Going to get it repaired/replaced tomorrow. I also hear that Samsung make better panels so yeah
