Up until recently I would have said System Shock 2... now, I would say S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. No other game have I ever experienced in my life where the music alone has creeped me out to the point of not wanting to continue playing. Let alone the actual visible horror elements (or in the case of Bloodsuckers, not so visible).
After I finish with Vampire: TMB (finish once... then go back to again and again and again) I will probably pick up STALKER again but it will probably be a little difficult considering how much I hate Bloodsuckers and Snorks... but I will have to tough it out, eventually.foxhound_fox
Bloodsuckers and snorks are your greatest fears? Mind controllers and pseudogiants were what freaked me out the most. The snorks were a bit disturbing at first, but once I got a good idea of how to evade them, I realized they're just like the zombies, only they're faster and make growling noises. They did continue to spook me throughout the game with their fast, out-of-the-blue attacks, but I grew out of my fear of them. Bloodsuckers I can understand a little better since there are invisible versions, and you can start feeling a little panicky when you realize you can't keep track of their tiny white dot eyes, but as long as you keep moving and stay alert while you know they're around, you should be alright.
Pseudogiants, on the other hand, can be terrible foes in confined spaces. Out in the open they're not so bad since they can't keep up with you very well (and they don't look as gigantic at a distance, somehow), but in tight spaces where you don't have a lot of room to back up, they are horribly intimidating since you know it's going to take a hellstorm of bullets to take them down and you have a limited time to fire it at them before they corner you and beat the living crap out of you. Not to mention they just look freaky as hell with their morbidly deformed bodies and lopsided faces.
And mind controllers, well, I don't think it needs to be explained why they're so frightening. While I wouldn't rate STALKER as the scariest game I've played overall (its atmosphere is nice, but it doesn't draw me in the way it seems to for a lot of people, so I'm left only feeling truly fearful at the underground lab areas), the first time I came across that mind controller in the first underground area was the closest thing to a heart attack I'd ever experienced. :P
