I have to say system shock 2. Its the only game that me jump. Everytime i would get hit iwould shudder a little bit, especially by the spiders. The atmosphere is great and the story of the Many is very coherent and well thought.

Pffh, F.E.A.R. is all cliched horror. Now S.T.A.L.K.E.R., there is a terrifying game. Listen to the music track "Dead Cities Pt2" from here and tell me that hearing that in combination with a desolate and dark place with mutated creatures jumping out at you wouldn't be the scariest game ever.

Silent Hill 3. Playing that with headphones, in complete and utter darkness besides the glow of the tv, caused me to have some sort of schizophrenic side effects. And nightmares galore.

For me FEAR, there is something about little dead kids that creeps me out. I didn't find System Shock 2 that scary.

System Shock 2 is by far the most frightening PC game I've ever played. I would rate it a 9/10 for fear factor. It has horrible looking and sounding enemies, it has scarce resources, it has a profound sense of chlaustrophobia and isolation. Random respawns can send me into mad animal panics.

The marine campaign in Aliens vs Predator is one of the most impressive works of fear I've ever experienced. Lots of darkness, lots of very fast, very lethal enemies and wonderful use of sound. 7/10. Caused extreme panic, but not pure fear.

F.E.A.R, I would rate a 3/10. Its only effective fear mechanic is shock - which is not only the weakest possible fear device, it was also very predictably used in F.E..A.R. It's a horror themed game, but there's just no way it's a horror game. Screw subjectivity, if you find F.E.A.R scary you're under 13 years old or a girl.

The only game I would rate a 10/10 for fear is Silent Hill 1 (on playstation). It just has everything, plus a very melancholic story which just seems to aplify my sense of fear. I found Silent Hill 2 and 3 extremely tame by comparison, and didn't even bother with 4. But the original... man... it's a horror masterpiece, and one of the best stories I've ever experienced in a game.

Resident Evil is really just about shocks. It manages those shocks extremely well, but not much else. 4/10.

Doom 3 is like a 7/10 for the opening few hours - the see-or-shoot mechanic is pretty smart, and for the first hour or two it did work on me, but it quickly became pretty tedious. 4/10 after the first couple hours.

i'm not under 13 years old or a girl and i found it scary. i don't find system shock 2 scary (a bit spooky and eery, perhaps). anyone who finds sytem shock 2 frightening is a prepubescent boy or a wuss. now, just cuz i say it doesn't make it true, eh? subjectivity is key.

i agree AVP as marine was scarey.

though the scariest game i've played was cliver barkers undying.

Doom, Fear and stalker weren't scarey tbh.

I'm sorry but honestly little dead girls are the scariest thing ever for some random reason. Call me what you will but i find any game/movie with dead little girls in them scary, ie the ring, the grudge, ect. Second scariest thing is when your in a dark place (in a game of course) and you know somethings there and not attacking yet, thats scary to me.

So in gaming terms id have to say that probably FEAR, and Doom 3 are pretty scary. Then Silent Hill, that game is really scary.

the scariest part of System Shock was when you'd walk down the corridors and one of the random generated mutants would startbeating on you from behind..those moments were intense. I just tried to re-install it in XP..and it crashed when you try to run it

I thought Doom 3 was pretty scary. I liked F.E.A.R. too. Most people don't remember Realms of the Haunting but that was a scary game back in the day.
