I recently built a new PC and have been getting quite a bit of screen tearing. I've mainly tried Crysis and Mass Effect. Running on max settings for both.

What I get happens mostly in cutscenes, but sometimes also while in actual gameplay as well. It looks identical to this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/03/Tearing_%28simulated%29.jpg

What could be the cause of this? Is it monitor related or GPU related? What can I do to fix the issue?

Specs: (No overlocking)

CPU: Intel Core i5
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P
GPU: Asus Radeon 5850
RAM: G.Skill 4gb (2x2gb) DDR3 1600
PSU: Antec True Power New 650w
HDD: 500g 7200rpm Samsung Spinpoint F3
OS: Windows 7 64 bit

Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster T220

try turning on v-sync or vertical sync or sync every frame... also turn on triple buffering. see if that helps.

I have. V-Sync helps a tiny bit, but not much and I've heard it's almost unbearable to use in FPS games. Triple buffering same thing.

Actually, Triple Buffering alone will take away tearing with no lag. It's Vsync with Triple Buffering that messes you up. The thing that sucks about DirectX is that it doesn't support Tripple Buffering, only with Vsync enabled at the same time.

With both off, both on, or Vsync alone the tearing is still there.

try turning off some high powered settings and find the sweet spot with each game. eg give the AA a bit of a break and see what happens when u lower it. if u still get screen tearing with 0x AA and a lot of screen tearing with 8x AA then its a fault somewhere (drivers maybe?)

Try some other games first. It could be the ATI drivers since the 5850 is new.

I have a Gtx 295 and I get screen tearing for the Left 4 Dead 2 demo but not L4D1. Ive tried every possible combination of settings. Crysis is smooth as silk when I am getting ~60 fps.
