So he's not getting me anything until my birthday (July) but is willing to spend a big amount (bigger than what my budget on speakers are anyways).

We've basically set our hearts on a B&W system although I might settle for something like Klipsch if I prefer horn over diamond.

Yes I know there might be some better DIY options and etc... but ya know my dad used to be a B&W Nautlilus owner uses B&W in his car etc.. and I absolutely LOVE them. (I do get brand loyal but if another product really is better I will not hesitate in changing to it)

So we discussed... Do we buy 2 floorstanding B&W's or 5.1 B&W's?

However my room is tiny and certainly can't fit any floorstanding speakers, I quote from the conversation:

"its reverberation actually... its to do with active and passive air movements colliding due to reflections"

And the same for 5 B&W speakers in a room like mine (5 metre X 3.5 metres X 2.2 metres).

Which led to the inevitable (don't hate) conclusion of settling for KEF 5.1 3000 series eggs.

I want the full surround experience with as close to audiophile quality as you get, yet in a room like mine they kind of have to be ****. I LOVE the KEF eggs and the sound is PHENOMENAL in a small room. they'll cost him about $2500 however.

This is where the silly part comes in. What we were planning to do was getting the KEF 5.1's and then adding a pair of B&W DM 684 or 685s in the front channel on each side of the KEF centre, leaving 2 KEFs hanging on the left/right side of my room, and 2 behind me for a 7.1 surround with DTS HD Master Audio.

I am not nearly experienced with this stuff do dare doing something so... 'odd' but my dad does know his stuff I guess? (inb4 haters) I think all these discussions might lead him to re building what he once owned and possibly (hopefully) buying these

I can only dream though haha.

HIS IDEA: Get me KEF 5.1's for my birthday, add 2 B&Ws later

MY IDEA: Buy 2 B&Ws (or whatever bookshelf speakers I PREFER in the price range) first, WITH MY OWN MONEY, then wait for KEF 5.1 as a birthday present.

The wait is killing me and is seriously unbearable.

Thoughts? :P

Again hard to comment as in NA there is a lot better than B&W available for less, but have fun I guess, hopefully you enjoy your upcoming system.

Not here in Norway... We don't have the luxury of all the options you get in NA. Again talking to the Norwegian audiofiles Seas are great but time and again in both low and mid budgets (even high ones) most seem to suggest either B&W or Klipsch regardless of budget (Diamond/Palladium for high, CM/THX Ultra for mid or DM/Reference for low where I am). Even then they tell me I need to chose between Diamond tweeter and Horn tweeters as those to are arguably the industry leaders in their respective areas. I don't know what you've got against B&W btw... sure their cheapest stuff is made in china and they have some silly products like MM-1s and P5s but in the end you can't read any review or product info that doesn't tell you how legendary they are (NOT TO MENTION ABBY ROAD STUDIOS USES B&W!), and how many claim B&W made the perfect loudspeaker (800D) Also want to add that I am hopeless at building so DIY is DEFINITELY not a budget. Lastly, my dad told me (like pretty much every one I've talked to) to go missioning out in hi-fi stores with a DVD and a CD in hands testing every sound setup they have, finding out which suits my ears best in music and films. I've got no school on Monday, so I think I'll dedicate that day to taking a trip to Moss (Seas demo) and the nearest hi-fi stores. But I have a strong feeling its going to come down to Klipsch vs B&W ... :P

Me personally, if I can DIY I will. First computers, then guitars, guitar amps (For my next one maybe :P ,) speakers, ect. DIY is way more fun then auditioning higher end speakers IMO. The work put into it makes it seem worth more than speakers of equal or greater value, even if they end up sounding worse.

Nothing, they're great speakers, just placed at a high price, and performance is generally over exaggerated. Being a company that competes in the mass market (aimed at the higher end) they still have to promote and market their products in a manner to attract attention. And anyone who claims the 800D is a perfect loudspeaker is just wrong. There are a lot of options in the audio world, most of which are limited or not as well known.

I'm a bit confused: Are you eventually planning to use the B&W's as your main front speakers in the surround sound setup with the KEFs, and using the four KEF surrounds in a 7.1 setup? If so, I cannot emphasize enough how bad an idea this is; the KEFs will not be timbre matched to the B&Ws, and your front stage will be messed up. If you want to go 7.1, just stick with the KEFs and get an extra pair of eggs; you'll be happier in the long run. Modern receivers will allow you to switch to your B&Ws for music.

Personally, if you have to pick between to two, I would go with the surround setup. Unless you find yourself sitting in front of your speakers listening to music frequently - the type to curl up with a book or simply close your eyes and enjoy the music - you'll get more utility out of the KEFs. They might not be of the quality of the B&Ws for straight-up stereo music, but they'll certainly still sound great, plus you'll be able to use them for movies and gaming.

And don't worry about what anyone else thinks about B&W: The important thing is that you love them and are happy with your purchase. Listening is a qualitative experience. :)

Good luck whatever you choose; they're definitely good choices to have to make!
