I bought a Nvidia GEFORCE 7900 GT last year, and up until a few months ago ive had zero problems.

Then i started experiencing this phenonema in games. Textures stretch way beyond their boundries in 'stripes'. Sometimes they can stretch a LONG way, and they usually join with other things (for instance, a guards arm will have a stripe that joins to a tree or building, and moves accordingly).

It doesn't happen all the time, only on random objects in games.

I was using the  "91.28_forceware_winxp2k_international" drivers, but since the problem persisted I updated them to " 93.81_forceware_winxp2k_international".

These drives made the problem worse, and introduced a 'flickering' effect where i presume light was being processed incorrectly. It was like a strobe light whenever you look around, making a game unplayable.

I uninstalled them and reinstalled the previous drivers, and the flickering went away, though the texture stretching persisted.

Does anyone have any idea what this problem is?! If so, does anyone know how to fix it, or is it permanant damage to my card? It is at factory settings, not overclocked.

My setup is :

P4 3.6GHz

1GB RAM

GEFORCE 7900 GT 256MB

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Could you tell us your card's temps while playing the offending game(s)?

Also so far this has happened in Quake 4, Jade Empire, KOTOR 2, STALKER & GRAW. Most, if not all, were patched up fully.

Just sounds like your card is damage. Never had a card burn out on me but it does happen.

Maybe take this as a sign to get a better one? The nvidia 8600's are about to come out.

Last time a video card burnt out on me, the computer would randomly restart, become unresponsive, and crash. He describes his problem as only happening while he plays games. A burnt out video card would cripple the entire PC, during any task.

I downloaded the " 93.81_forceware_winxp2k_international". drivers from the BETA page. Are they the same as the ones you downloaded?

im not sure about that, Overheating GPU's tend to produce these odd colored "rainbows" everywhere. And Just do some wierd stuff to Textures.

is there any particular reason why it would be overheating? My motherboard fan and my graphics card fan are both running, and case is cool to touch. It isn't that well venilated, but I didn't really think that would be an issue.

Is it getting warmer in your area? I had to clock back down a little on my overclocks for a bout of hot weather. Blow all the dust off the card too. Definitely sounds like heat though, my last card would do that all the time during the day. I love the 93.81s, but try the 93.71s if they're giving you trouble.

Did u Oc ? Cause if you did, underclock a little bit and see the effect, if u didnt OC also underclocking may solve the problem sometimes. and u could still do what Beaverman said 2 do.

Yeah - because overclocking puts more strain on the PSU supplying the graphics card. So try underclocking and see if the problem goes away.

Perhaps not with the 8600GTS.

Check your temperatures for gods sake. It's in the nvidia control panel.. 3d settings.. monitor temperature levels. Leave the window open and play a game for a while, then minimize it and check.

I did. Usually the card is at 68 degrees, i ran a KOtoR for 25 minutes and the peak was 78 degrees. I will open up the case after work and dust around. Is there a particularly safe way of doing this without damaging the card? Can I underclock the card in the nvidia control panel?

EDIT : It 'texture rainbows' on this game quite significantly. It has been patched fully. It does appear to get progressively worse the more I play, so I gather it is heat induced. Also it sometimes crashes and stalls randomly during dialog, but that might just be the game. It stalls and repeats a millisecond of sound in a 'machine gun' effect, and usually means I need to physically turn the computer off as it won't let me Ctrl-Alt-Delete out of it. Interestingly, I have never had the texture rainbow problem with HL2, which I would have thought would rag my GPU more than KOtoR.

you say it isnt overclocked? try and underclock your card and see if this has an effect. My original 7900gs did a similar thing after a month I underclocked it and it worked fine again(at the underclocked levels). It was still well within the warranty so I RMA'ed it.

See if that helps

this sounds similar to what just happend to my card.  texture stretching and artifacts on the screen.  my video card crapped out because it wasnt a very high quality one (diablotek).  i just bough a 50 dollars bfg card to tide me over until i rebuild a new system in the summer.  sounds to me like its overheating or dying...you might have to buy a whole new card.Â
