It has something to do with how Windows manages files and folders. Basically you can't end a folder name with a period.

It probably has to do with old file name conventions - Windows will take off the full stop from the end to stop the system confusing the folder with a blank file type or similar.

(I tested it on my Win7 and it just removes the period)

Edit: Actually I have found that it sometimes deletes the period while other times it makes the folder disappear.

Weird.
