I'm getting internet access to my computer through a USB dongle , so my ethernet port is available . Can I connect my PC to another PC via Ethernet cable and then get the second PC connected to the Internet ?

Yes I've done this with my desktop computer. I had dongle connection on my laptop and the two computers connected with ethernet cable. It works.

You'll need a crossover cable and use ICS http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49569-internet-sharing-using-cross-over-cable.html?filter

Actually it works with a normal straight through ethernet cable. I just tested it again to make sure. All you have to do is connect the two computers with the cable, and on the computer that has the dongle you go to the internet options - sharing - and check the allow other users to connect through this computer.

Should be Network & sharing center - change adapter settings - right click on the connection and select properties - sharing tab - check the "Allow other users to connect through this computer" or something like that.

This is dependent on the NIC being used. Some can "smart swap" the send and recieve pins while most cannot.

To the Op: Homegroup is completely unrelated to internet sharing. JigglyWiggly posted the link to a tutorial on how to do this. Go read it.

ICS can be done fairly easy in Windows, just open Network Connections then click Manage network connections. Right-click the connection that you want to share, and then click Properties, it will ask for admin password(or should) just type it in and hit enter. Click the Sharing tab, and then select the Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection check box. Note your IP address will need to be configured accordingly but just use DHCP. That's pretty much it, just let your NIC pick up the connection and you're set. Also a crossover cable isn't necessary, these days every NIC has Autio-MDIX even the chep little ones, people telling you to use a crossover are thinking from days gone by.

I don't think crossover cables are needed anymore with direct connections.
