"As intriguing as the mechanics of the game are, Creative Assembly also acknowledge that the overall art design is probably more central to the success of this game than any other in the series. The art team has been inspired by all of the conventional icons of the land and the wide range of seasons and weather will help add variety to the battles. You may, for instance, find yourself fighting in the same province during the spring as cherry blossoms drift by, and then come back for a battle as layers of snow sit on the land in winter. The team is reintroducing nighttime battles to the game, and we saw a spectacular example of a castle assault during a thunderstorm at night. The way the lightning cracked in the distance and lit up the trees and soldiers as rain collected in puddles around them was phenomenal. The ranks of soldiers, all outfitted in distinctive primary colors and sporting battle flags on their backs, looked better than any we've seen in the franchise.

Battle animations are superb. The units in Shogun 2 have a total of 52 different bones, which is a nearly 25% increase over those in previous Total War games. This allows for much more natural and realistic animations, which incidentally, were captured using the British Kendo Association and actual bushido fighters. Samurai were known for their strong, flexible armor and for their mastery of multiple weapons like the katana and nodachi. During our demo, we saw two ranks of katana samurai battling with each other and it looked even better than the thrilling combat in Empire. Add in support for up to 56,000 units in a single battle, and it's clear to see just how ambitious Shogun 2 really is.

To further add to the authenticity, the team is also using all the original weapons on the original materials for the sound effects. They've even gone so far as to record the sounds of the historical footwear of each unit type walking and running on all the types of terrain represented in the game.

The game's AI is being programmed according to Sun Tzu's Art of War. As one of the core foundations for this kind of mix of melee and ranged warfare, Sun Tzu is an obvious starting point, but what was particularly revealing is how much Sun Tzu talks like a programmer. If, for example, you outnumber the enemy more than five-to-one, Sun Tzu recommends an enveloping move. If you outnumber the enemy two-to-one, he prefers a direct engagement."

Who the hell cares how many bones are animated if the AI is still absent? "Wow! Look how awesome that samurai looks as it wanders aimlessly back and forth in front of my archers until it dies!"

The original Shogun was a very good game, but then they went and ruined it with the expansion when they added ridiculous units in such as the kensai. Now they've gone and added hero units which are even more fantastical. What's the point? Why even try tying it to history at this point? Why not throw in ninjas with lasershark guns and 50 metre tall Hello Kitty golems too?

I am definitely excited for this because it was the original Shogun that got me into the Total War series. Of course there is absolutely no way I am going to pay full price. The games progressions have been as vast as an annual sports game series. I will wait for the expansions and a gold release... then play it a ton!

I'll be watching this. Can't get optimistic after that steaming pile of **** that was empire. No guns and less ambitious is a start though. Hopefully the AI isn't completely braindead and the game is playable on release this time.

Two unfinished games, tons of lies and unjustified delays, no more mod support, awful elementary design decisions, shameless milking...

I have a lot of reasons to hate CA.

The UK team went from Rome to Empire. In 5 years they only managed to make that piece of crap... And one year later they came up with another full game. And the next year, another one. Isn't something very wrong here?

The AU team went from Medieval 2 to Stormrise. That says a lot.

And what's that about our Rome and M2 copies?:|

They're leaving Rome 2 as a backup game. But I reckon the art style would be more interesting in shogun, especially since we are lacking a lot of western-made asian themed games. Looking forward to it, Empire was average, let's hope this is better. Also, does anyone know what CA Australia is doing?

For the people that are able to run it, but from what I know Baranga had the same experience as me, horrible performance, glitches and crashes. I can't even play for 30 minutes in total world domination (or w/e it's called), even from the first minutes in the campaign I prayed that it won't hang somewhere and cause a crash, saves get corrupted after you exit the game and the next time you won't be able to load them you'd have to start again, etc and that was with the last patch they released.... For some it worked or worked great but for quite a few it didn't even run.

"One particularly novel development is the introduction of hero units." "Based on mythologized historical figures like the warrior monk Benkei, hero units are a nearly unstoppable force on the battlefield, capable of holding bridge crossings against entire armies, or smashing through a battle line to engage the enemy general." Sigh...

I guess creative assembly has moved all of their development resources to their pc side, since there's no way that they would be in alpha stage with Shogun 2 without help from their former console side that made the hack n slash total wars seeing as they've just released Nopleon. So CA an even greater pc developer now whether haters like it or not. :P

Also, I'm surprised that people still want yet another ancient European ecentric total war, the Feudal Japan Era is by far more interesting imo. But we'll wait and see how well CA executes it.

True... that got me kind of worried when reading. If it's gonna turn into some Jet Li movie in the middle of the battlefield then that will be lame.

You guys obviously didn't play the first one because that unit is not something new.

Oh and this time period they did have guns. A lot of them. This is what gave Oda Nobunaga the advantage even though he was betrayed and killed before he could finish uniting Japan.

Is this going to take place right before the Meiji restoration or even earlier than that? I really want it to be swords and arrows, not an 18th century version of japan.

This is taking place in the 16 century. Most strategy games that deal with Japan pick this period. The setting is used by multiple games. If you ever played any of the console games made by Koei, they use this period a lot. They have a series called Nobunaga's Ambition which deals with the warlords of this time. A lot of famous warlords during this era such as Takedea Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin. The two fought a series of very well known and famous battles between each other. Battles that the Japanese still study to this day.

The nations in Europe were also just starting to trade with the Japanese. The war was very profitable for them since they were able to sell the Japanese weapons like Muskets and cannons. The Japanese were actually able to quickly figure out the design and start making them themselves.

A lot was going on from the large Taoist rebellion against the foreigners to arts and culture changes like the Tea Party.

This period is usually always used because the period right after this the Japanese close themselves up to all foreigners and go into isolation. So during this time their is a lot fighting between the lords for land, plus their is a lot of foreign nations playing for power as well. So this time period always gets used for strategy games.

They were actually the coolest unit in the game. They were expensive to produce and very high up in the tech tree. They weren't that useful since it's just one guy in the unit. But if you put a couple of them at a choke point like a bridge it made for some good laughs. Pretty cool watching 10 guys block an entire army from advancing.

British Kendo Association? Isn't that just two Jock louts knifing each other outside the pub after the Rangers lose a match?

Really, really looking forward to it.

Will have to reinstall my copy of Shogun to celebrate.

I just hope, really hope the units have the random generation of certain texture bits.

Like in Medieval 2.

It helped so much in creating a believable scene than the armies of clones in every other TW game.
