I had a quote from a local pc shop to build a pc for me but what I want to know is, is it worth the money or can I get better stuff for my money if I build it myself.

here are the specs:

Octigen Midi ATX case (with a 350W PSU supplied)
ADATA/Transcend 2GB DDR800
Asus M2M-MXSEPLUS SKt am2
250GB sata HDD 7200rpm
Althon 64 X2 5200+ 2.6ghz (AM2)
Asus Lightscribe DVD writer IDE
Asus 512Mb GF8800gts

sub total : £285.11

Total for whole build = £335.00

Would it be worth it buying the parts seperately then building it for myself?

It's always better building your own.

You can get better stuff for that amount of money, plus that PSU is inadequate for that setup.

First rule of PC building - choose a solid power supply!

A 450w Corsair or 500w OCZ would be fine for that setup and set you back about £45.

Oh and just as a little comparison I was gonna build my own system for about £300, spec as follows...

OCZ 500w PSU £43

Intel E5200 dual core 2MB cache £53

MSI Neo P35 £53

2Gb Kingston Hyper-X 800Mhz ram £27

250GB Hitachi Deskstar HDD 8MB cache £30

Sony/Optiarc 20XLightscribe DVD-RW £15

iCute black case with 140mm front fan and side window £20

Second hand 8800GTS 640MB £50

If I had extra I would get a better graphics card, you could build something similar and get a better graphics card, plus the above setup is good for a nice overclock on the processor even on standard cooling.

I would never bother letting somebody build a PC for me, waste of money! :)

I will never get AMD again after this current laptop I have. I agree with the others, the better PSU is the ONLY way to go. I had a friend that used an apevia psu that came with the case... he fried almost every component in his machine.

Also, when you build your own, you know how to fix your own properly.
