I play FEAR on maximum settings but with no softshadows at 1152X864 with 4X AA and 4X AF. and at times I get like 20 or 25fps everynow and then, expecially in the offices. And i dnt think i should be getting performance this bad. Oblivion and COD2 can be bad at times aswell, COD2 mainly slows down with loads of chatactors on screen, such as the D-DAY mission.

Heres my specs

AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.2Ghz

2GB DDR PC3200 RAM

ATI Radeon X1950Pro 512 MB using 7.4 drivers. I tried the 7.7 drivers and nothin changed

soundblaster Audigy soundcard

does anyone know what the problem could be

Have you tried toning down those specs, liuke maybe 2xAA and no AF, and see what impact that has on your performance?

from those specs, i could only guess that its either you processor or your video card...but im thinking more about it being the processor

Another question

how much better would a X2 4200 or 4600+ be?. because im planning on gettin a motherboard with a AM2 socket but im on a very tight budget and the 5000+ and higher r a tad out my price range.

I think both of those processors would be a very significant performance boost. And yes, it looks like your processor is bottlenecking imo.

Its definitly your cpu. I have the same setup but 2 7900gs's in sli. Performance wise I should get like 33% more frames then you with a good processor, but because I have a amd 64 3200+ I have the same prob. I am not upgrading to the opteron 185 2.6 gig dual core and I expect to max all games with ease because even with the horrible processor I maxed everything but bioshock with a relatively good framerate. According to benchmarks, going from a 3200+ to the opteron 185 should get me over 35 frames per game on average give or take some depending on the game. So basically, I am trying to say that you should upgrade your processor. you have a very good videocard setup as do I, and our processors dont let us experience what our videocards and ram should truly offer us. Hope this helps.

Keep in mind that you probably have 184pin ram so you would have to get new ram for the mobo in addition to a new psu and processor, whereas you can get socket 939 (assuming you have socket 939 from what it sounds like) processor for relatively cheap. The fx60 and opteron 185 are pricier, but the opteron 180 is a pretty cheap, high-quality 2.4 gig dual core cpu (i almost bought it, but apparantly the 2.6 gig opteron can overclock to 3.2 gigs with proper cooling and the highest I saw the 180 hit was 2.8 so it offers slightly more future proofing for an extra $80, oh and it runs a little cooler which is always good for a processor).

It has something to do with the drivers, you disable the drivers for the mouse(although it still works) and my FPS went from 25ave to 75-150. I saw it on Toms hardware forum after doing a google search when I was getting crap frame rates.

QUOTE from forums it was in:

This is gonna sound weird but it could be your mouse. I remember reading something about the Logitech g5 before, so i Googled it for you.

You get a BIG drop in performance because you have one of these
device in any games that uses FEAR engine :
- G5 Mouse ?
- G7 Mouse ?
- G15 Keyboard ?

Here is the solution for you :

Go in "Device Manager"
Expand "Human Interface Devices"

Disable all "HID-compliant device"
where Hardware Ids begin by :

"HIDVid_046d&Pid_c041&..."

How will you know the Hardware Ids ?

- Right click on the device and select "Properties"
- Switch to Details Tab
- Select Hardware Ids Property in the drop-down list

Enjoy!

Found this in a forum among others. I'll post the links if you want to read more about it.

Crazy - I've got the G11 but have suffered no such performance drops - but surely it's similar enough to the G15 that it should?

I'm not exactly sure. It might not happen on all systems but enough of them that someone found a solution to the problem.

When you mean maxed, do you mean maxed as in everything but soft shadows (ie 4xAA, 4xAF, Max Lighting, Max Textures, Max Models, Max Shading, Max Physics, Bullet Shells and etc...)?

Because if you, don't be surprised. That game is pretty demanding even by today's standards. Try reducing features to medium, turn off weapon casing and lower AA (I just turn it off). You need all the FPS you can get, at least for online anyway. Also, try and check that you don't have any background programs running (which is why dual cores are handy).

I run both a G5 mouse and a G15 keyboard and I do not suffer from any kind of performance hit. Sure, I now have 3 extra processes running in the background but they don't affect my system other than holdings itself in memory and the little CPU utizilization from time to time.

Thanks a lot for the help. Are any of us supposed to give two ****s about how awesome your machine is? The guy came here asking for help, not for some tool to come brag about his uber pwnage rig. OP - it's almost certainly your CPU, and you should definitely look into just upgrading the CPU if you have socket 939. The cost difference will be enormous, and you can still get some great CPUs for the 939 socket. It wouldn't be bad to upgrade to AM2...there's just a lot more work involved (new RAM, reinstalling Windows, etc). Rudi-Johnson - you are not bottlenecking. Bottlenecking occurs when you have some very fast hardware that is not being taken full advantage of because some other piece of hardware you have is too slow to keep up. The idea is that your machine is only as fast as your slowest component. If I run an 8800 GTX is a machine with a single core Pentium 4 processor...well, the 8800 simply isn't worth it. Games can only run so well with that slow of a processor, so I might as well have picked up a low 7 series card, or even a 6 series card, and my performance might be roughly equal, just because the processor is so slow. If your performance has sagged over time, it means you have something going wrong with your computer - probably spyware or viruses. Try defragging your HDD, as I think someone suggested. But your best bet would be to back everything up and then reformat and reinstall Windows. Drastic, but it fixes many problems.

Further, I call BS on your FPS.

Unless you're running on a 17" monitor or a miniscule resolution.
