Should I be able to tell the difference between 60 and 50 FPS?

In every game I play, whenever the frame rate drops to even something like 55FPS, I notice a stutter. Every time it changes I notice. Someone told me you shouldn't be able to tell the difference between 60 and 40 but playing a game at 40fps is horrible for me. Is this a sign of a bad component or something?

Here are my specs for anyone:

GTX 285. q6600 at 3.0ghz. 4gb ram. Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

:(

Well theoretically you shouldn't be able to notice anything; what are you using to measure this framerate drop?

What you will notice is the "drop" in FPS. Otherwise staying at a stable framerate of 60 would be no different from 40 depending on the game. I recommend enabling V-sync or lower some of the settings if you can't keep the FPS together.

Er, no, that's not how it goes. You can see the difference up to 30 frames, then after that you'll only notice at like 40, then 60, then somewhere around 100.

Anyways, as it's been said, you aren't seeing the 50 frames, just the drop to 50 frames. 50 frames stable looks very close to 60 frames stable, and certainly wouldn't stutter. Enable vsync, it'll do wonders.

That's assuming it's a 100% stable 30FPS with perfect motion blur built it. Like in a movie. Games are not the same.

You can't see the difference in 30 fps from 60 fps if it is consistent, but games jump around in fps. You notice the jumping around of frames not the difference in fps.

in every thread concerning framerates, someone always has to say this its so wrong you can see fps difference up to your monitors referesh rate, technically you can see a difference up to 120fps and above if you have a monitor that displays that high of a refresh rate, although its not a significant difference that high, it is still noticable

Um, no it's normal, i notice it too, FPS don't stay constant they fluctuate. You might have vsync on which makes 60 look smoother and when there's a drop it's noticable.

You might be able to see a minor difference depending on where you are at in the game world.

Yes you can notice the difference, enable v-sync and triple buffering and this problem wont occur I think.

Yes..detecting sudden drops in framerate (even from 60 to 50) isn't difficult. It's when you view the same scene at different framerates (at seperate, spaced-apart times) that it gets difficult to detect a difference.

The people claiming that we can't detect differences in framerate beyond 30/60 fps are just wrong. Even when a game drops from 100 fps to 60 fps, the change in motion smoothness is quite obvious to me..particularly in fast-paced games.

And yeah, I really can't stand playing at 30 fps for most genres.

I can notice the difference, especially in driving games and First Person Shooters.Things seem much smoother and you move faster at 60 fps.
