My computer has been making a low rattling sound ever since I installed my new CPU fan/heatsink. The sound only occurs when I first turn it on, then it dies down quickly, and I don't notice it. It's hard to pinpoint exactly where the sound comes from, but I'm pretty sure it's that plate on the back of the motherboard that allows the heatsink to attach. Opening my computer, I've tried tightening various screws but everything feels very tight.

So before I decide to take out my motherboard and mess with this plate, I'm wondering if it's really worth it. When under light use my CPU temp is around 30 and after awhile of playing games it maxes out at 50.

Maybe the fan itself is a little lose and rattles while spinning up to speed.

Did you by any chance forget to put on the goo between the heatsink and cpu?

No, that's awful advice. Every cpu model has a limit in temperature before it becomes unstable. For AMD cpu's it tends to be pass 60C before you encounter stability issues and with Intel above 75C.

I uesd to have a Q6600 OC to 3.6 and i was getting 90C on games with 0 stability issues.

Dont assume anything, Your Q6600 if it was G0 had a maximum Core temperature Tjmax is 95C,while B3's is 71C . Running a cpu beyond 70C for periods of time shorten its lifespan too. Phenom 2's Tj max is 62C after 65C they become unstable almost 100% of the time. While say an i5 2500k max Tj is 73C while they may not become unstable until 80+C. at 95C it aggressively starts throttling down.

65C it sounds very low if it is true then these Phenom 2's are pretty useless, i mean if someone have a room temperature 35C then even with a good cooler under heavy load you are doing to get 65C very easily.

No not really, Ive had room temperatures upto 90F (32C) and my Phenom 2 X4 955 @ 3.6 Ghz , using an old CM V8 cooler stayed below 55C. My cpu usually maxes out at 45C with room temps around 76F about 25C. Normally with people that dont overclock have cool and quiet on which helps prevent overheating by throttling down the cpu.

Before I got my 212+ my phenom would hit like 65 when gaming. It still ran fine but i didn't want to risk it.
