Should I buy a DVD player that upconverts to 1080i to use on a 1080p HDTV?

I have an HDTV and want to buy an upconverting DVD player.

I don't want to buy a HD-DVD or Blue Ray player as they are too expensive.

I want to get an upconverting DVD player but not even a 1080p one because they are a little pricey.

There is a good Toshiba 1080i upconverting DVD player that I want to get but I am wondering if it will work OK with a 1080p HDTV.

Since the 1080p HDTV is higher, will it simply use the DVD player up to the DVD players max usage of 1080i (as opopsed to simply not being able to work properly with the DVD player?

Also, will there be a big difference between a 1080i and 1080p upconverting DVD player (when used on a 1080p HDTV)?

Seriously, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will eventually become the future, you're going to eventually get them. You can get a Toshiba HD-DVD player for $300, and it's not a bad idea to invest into a PlayStation 3, it's one of the cheapest Blu-Ray players out there($500). You could spend a lot of $ on a player that plays both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, since movies like Bourne and other Universal movies only come on HD-DVD.

I agree with the last two posts, but in answer to the question....it will not matter if the player outputs at 1080i as the Tv has no choice but to de-interlace that signal and display it at 1080p. But to be honest there really isn't that much of a difference.

Ok, so are you saying that I lose the benefit of a 1080i upconverting DVD player because I'm playing it on a 1080p HDTV or are you saying that I don't lose the benefit of the 1080i upconverting DVD player because the TV will use the DVD player's 1080i functionality and in fact upconvert it further to 1080p?

Basically, will the 1080i upconverting DVD player display better than a regular DVD player on a 1080p HDTV?

Absolutely! But honestly what is your budget, because not all players are created equal.

This is my budget and choice situation:

My current regular DVD player broke so I need to get a new one.

I can get (all prices Canadian):

-A cheap no-name regular DVD player for like $30

-A good named regular DVD player for like $60-70

-An upconverting 1080i player for $100

-An upconverting 1080p player for $130

-An HD-DVD or Blue Ray player but these are out of my price range (and I want to wait and see if a format wins or if dual players come down in price if a format does not win)

I don't want a cheap $30 one because they suck, so I thought I would get a known brand $60-70 one but then though that I may as well spend a little more for a $100 1080i upconverting one. I'm stopping here as I don't want to keep uping my budget range (e.g. by saying, well why not get a 1080p one for $130).
