If you are going to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo at some point, then yes.

I would suggest the evga superclocked. It's cheaper than most versions and faster.

Is it a 320 or 640? My monitor tops out at 1280x1024 so I figured the 640 would be useless for me...

Can you explain the step-up program? Haven't heard of this so far. And... I've also got 1 1280x1024 monitor & was thinking about the 320 MB 8800 GTS. However, does anyone know if a 640 MB would be better suited for RTS games such as Supreme Commander that are "bringing even the high end systems to their knees?" I'm reluctant to go w/ the 320 MB statement b/c of this....

you are given 90 days from date of purchase, and if a new card model comes out from evga, you can "step-up" to that new card by paying the difference between the retail cost of the new card and the old card you got, with the price based on what it was when you bought it. say for example you have a 8800 gtx, and in that time period the 8900 gtx comes out, well you can "trade in" your old card for the new one, by paying the difference. not too bad eh?

any gts, whether 640 or 320 will sometime struggle on that game, performance comparisons between the two models of the gts shows same performance levels, sometime the 320 actually trumps the 640, especially the overclocked 320's, and that is the trend all the way up to about 1600x1200, at higher levels that's where memory kicks in, so unless you have a high resolution, the 320 mb is excellent. don't worry, its the optimization of the game that's the problem at the moment, not a hardware problem to say the least, or lack of it thru less memory. i'd also like to point out that the 320 mb version is EXACTLY the same as the 640 mb version, same core, shader speed, etc, etc, the ONLY single difference is that the 640 mb is cut in half. same performance, lower price point thru reducing memory, not bad eh.

we need to know how many amps it proves in the 12 volt rail, or better yet tell us the brand and name.

Dude, I have no idea. I just bought this machine from a buddy about a week ago. Would it have the info directly on the psu or is there another way to check it out? It was built about 2 years ago, back when the 6800 GT was top of the line. That's what I've currently got in there...

On this subject. I'm thinking about making a new core duo system. Can anyone tell me if they think (I appreciate it would be speculation) whether the 320mb 8800gts is going to be quick enough to play crysis at med-high settings (but less than 1600x1200 because I have a 19inch samsung flat panel)? Any guesses?

Will my motherboard support that card though (I keep seeing something about DDR2 needed I dunno if that's on mine) and will my processor bottleneck the card?

The 8800 gts will completely own crysis from what we know now. The demo they were playing it on was on a pc with a 8800 gtx I believe, so it should run fine on the highest settings.

I'm sure Crysis will use more than 320mb even at 1280. There are games out now that use more than 320mb at 1280 with 4xaa like Dark Messiah.

Oh really? Maybe it would just be smarter to wait for the next batch of cards to come out and get the current GTS 640 cheaper...How many months do you think that'll be though?

Just trying to show off? I'm running a 6800 GT on a P4 3.2... I dunno a whole lot about upgrading, I'm on a tight budget so I ask for advice on hardware that I don't have yet and am going to wait for it to be cheaper and now I'm showing off? Don't bother commenting if you don't have anything helpful to say.

well the next batch of nvidia dx 10 cards will come 17th of april, dunno what that will do for the prices of the current offering as they are all g86 and g84 series, less powerful than the g80s that we have now.

Eh, I guess I will have to make the jump sooner than later. Now I just have to manage to do it under the nose of my girlfriend and parents (the former because I don't take her out as often as I should and the parents because every cent should go to tuition). I guess it'll be a good while before the card will go down. I read elsewhere that some new games are using more than 320 mb at 1280x1024 so maybe I should end up going with the 640...?
