BF2, the community within BF2 is much, much, much larger than 2142(hundreds of people still only play the demo, while barely any play the 2142 demo) The game isn't as unoptimized as BF2142, and the modding community is a lot more prevalent within BF2 than bf2142.

Go for BF2, Ea isnt bringing anny patches but the bf2 community is still very active. Just look at great mods like PoE2 and my favorite, Project Reality.

Dumbed down what exactly? I think there are many better game design features in 2142 over BF2. The gameplay is also quite a bit faster and for me the speed makes it much more challenging.
If you want to play modern warfare then go BF2, no other reason to choose the inferior BF2.Â

No offense, but would definitely not consider BF2 inferior to 2142, if anything I'd say BF2 is better!!
Yes, air vehicles were indeed "dumbed down" in 2142. They are relativaly awful (and novice) compared to BF2, where there is much more depth and room for skill development, which lends itself to very fun dogfights.
Also, it's very subjective, but I thought 2142 actually seemed slower than BF2.
air vehicles have been balanced, it takes a lot of skill to fly gunships now that you can die a lot quicker than the whoreships in BF2. 2142 has much more depth because of the unlock system alone/more equipment, skill dev is higher with more game modes, titan mode needs players to think more than conquest. 2142 is much faster than BF2, spawn beacons and pods that put you right back in the battle, tanks that go down in one hit because of real weakspots.
You are right, the air vehicles are more balanced in 2142. However, with practice you can learn to overcome those imbalances, and it keeps things interesting. Practice, practice, practice.
I won't easily be convinced there is more "depth" to the vehicles than in BF2 though...
after reading this thread I can only say this. I honestly think bf2142 is really just a mod they put together in a full retail package. I own and play both games. Yet when I do play, my mouse always more ofeton then none launches bf2 rather than bf2142. But actually we can all give our pros and cons all day on this topic, what it all comes down to, like someone else said already on this thread, is what you prefer. Futuristic (still use bullets in the game which is weird) or modern...

They still use bullets because lasers would be very boring gameplay wise.
And id pick bf2142, it takes all the good things from bf2 and makes em better. But okay if you like modern combat better then go with bf2. But if you dont care and just want to have fun then bf2142 is a lot better.
And yes bf2 has fast jets, but there arent that much room to use em in, maps are too small for that.
